About this listen

Lady Lea - beloved sister of the Emperor Caelan - is gifted with the ability to see into others' hearts and when she is moved to tears, those tears become pearls. When the hardened warrior Lord Shadrael kidnaps her and takes her through the fearsome Hidden Ways of the shadow world, Lea can foresee her destiny in him. For if she is to save Shadrael from his own darkness, she will ultimately have to choose between her brother and her abductor.

Editorial reviews

Author Deborah Chester has written multiple fantasy series. In The Pearls Chester returns to the world she invented for her Ruby Throne series. This fictive world is rendered in minute detail. The famous battle of good and evil is replayed in this exotic realm. There is also love and magic here, in this place where sympathetic clairvoyant Lady Lea tries to rescue her kidnapper, thorny Lord Shadrael, from his own dark ambitions. Narrator A. Savalas’ precise diction helps the listener to keep the story clearly in mind as she describes the highly rendered settings. Her normal and familiar tone helps to substantiate this mythical environment. And Savalas’ sweet and kind voice brings the pure and darling Lady Lea to life.

It's good.

I did not necessarily love this story but I did not find anything displeasing about the plot. I like the characters and the world felt believable. I'm not a huge fan of the narration but it was all right. the narrator did well, it's just that she felt a little too high pitched for me to enjoy. but maybe that's just me. I personally enjoy a lower octave.
