About this listen

All of his short life, Paavo Deshin has seen ghosts. The same two ghosts who have now approached him on the school playground, ghosts who look older and actually smell bad. Paavo’s cry for help brings the authorities, a few lawyers, and Retrieval Artist Miles Flint, who learns some secrets about the ghosts - and about Paavo’s parents. This short standalone science fiction novel in the Retrieval Artist series received a Special Mention from the prestigious international UPC contest. It fits right after the full novel Duplicate Effort in the timeline, but stands alone.

There are so many subtleties in it.

He is a fine reader.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I was very excited that another story had been published.

Too short, but very consistent quality story

STORY (sci-fi) - The Retrieval Artist series is one of my favorites, and this short novel is well-done. The only thing is that, probably due to its short length, the story isn't as complicated as I've come to expect from books in the series. Therefore, Miles, the main character, doesn't do enough interesting detective work to keep the story really exciting. It is, however, a nice little introduction to Miles, his life under Armstrong Dome on the moon and what a Retrieval Artist does.

PERFORMANCE - Jay Snyder has a nice deep voice, perfect for Miles. He does a good job reading, but this performance isn't one of my favorites.

OVERALL - No sex, cursing or violence. I'd say this story would appeal to any age or sex except young children, but I think the full-length stories are much better. The first book is a great place to start, as you'll follow Miles' career as a police officer before he becomes a Retrieval Artist.

Short novel that fell short of my expectations...
