Informative, Encouraging, and Empathetic

Taking care of a loved one with dementia can be challenging and frustrating, especially if you don’t know what to expect or how to handle difficult situations. This terrific book by a doctor who counsels patients and caregivers alike will provide a lifeline. The author organizes the book around his patient Shiela, Shiela’s sister Kendra, and Shiela’s college-aged nephew Tyler, providing rich detail about Kendra and Tyler's efforts to be good caregivers and their and Sheila's roller coaster of emotions.

These recurring episodes frame the book’s three parts. First, the author explains the types of dementia, their typical progression, and their signs and symptoms. Second, the author details practical solutions for (among others) communication, challenging days, dealing with frustrations, and of course day-to-day aspects of caregiving. Third, the author reminds the caregiver of the importance of self-care and knowing when it is time to find a long-term care facility. In addition to being enormously helpful, the encouraging and empathetic book reminds you that you are not alone.
