About this listen

In The President Will See You Now, devoted Reagan insider Peggy Grande shares behind-the-scenes stories, intimate moments, and insights into one of America's most beloved presidents. Grande, who started in the Office of Ronald Reagan as a college student and earned her way into a coveted role as the president's Executive Assistant, offers an unparalleled perspective on the post-presidency of a political icon.

Grande's stories and never-before-seen photos show a unique, private side to a public figure and leader who reshaped conservatism, ushered in an era of prosperity, and helped spur the end of the Cold War. Grande reveals what day-to-day life was like in Reagan's California office, including the former president's relationship with the First Lady and his interactions with friends, world leaders, and everyday Americans. Grande recalls how Reagan kept a vigorous schedule for years after he left the White House, his robust engagement with others, and ongoing political advocacy. Despite his eventual Alzheimer's diagnosis, Grande shows how Ronald Reagan remained true to core beliefs, his gentlemanly kindness, and his undying hope for his country.

Today the Reagan legacy looms over American politics more than ever. Grande reminds listeners why: When Ronald Reagan was president, we not only loved ourselves but also loved America, and the American values he represented: Faith, optimism, and patriotism.

Critic reviews

"Peggy Grande's memoir is the book to read on Ronald Reagan's post-presidential years...Among the most unique and touching [books] ever done on the man...Wonderful." (The American Spectator)

"Peggy Grande had a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to serve President Reagan after his presidency, and we are fortunate to have her stories....This is a fresh look at a wonderful man who continues to inspire long after he served our country." (Dana Perino, White House press secretary for George W. Bush and best-selling author of And the Good News Is... and Let Me Tell You About Jasper...)
"Peggy's book reminds us of Ronald Reagan the man as well as his presidency, surely one of the most consequential of the 20th century. She shares the day-to-day workings of his post-presidency office and the joy of working for such an amiable, warm, and humble man who championed American values and principles. She also shares the heartbreaking moment toward the end of his life when he was diagnosed with Alzheimer's, and the touching note he wrote to the public in which he said, 'When the Lord calls me home, whenever that may be, I will leave with the greatest love for this country of ours and eternal optimism for its future.' Pure Ronald Reagan and a beautiful story from someone who had the privilege of seeing him every day for years. A great read!" (Jim Angle, retired chief national correspondent, Fox News Channel)

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I'd really recommend it to anyone who is an Executive Assistant, as I am. It is an inspiration to listen to how dedicated Peggy was to President Reagan and to doing her job well, and it's a good reminder of how much of an effect we can really have on those whom we support.

I always loved and admired President Reagan. This book brought him to life for me in a special way as I am also an Executive Assistant but to someone nearly as important or influential. My heart is overwhelmed by your devotion and loyalty to such a beloved man.

Amazing

I didn't expect to get so much from this book. It was pleasant and uplifting in the memories and loyalty displayed by the author as well as the stories of the team around the President. Wonderful behind the scenes stories of the man, the support team and the elements of supporting an ex-POTUS. It was a great read of the functions and life after a President leaves office. The book added the the story of Ronald Reagan's life.

What a pleasant surprise!

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Depending on the friend, yes. Not many people I know listen to the memoirs of assistants to presidents, so it is not for just anyone. But for someone like me who has read and loves to know about the presidents and the people around them, this is one of the best books I have ever read on the subject.

What other book might you compare The President Will See You Now to and why?

Alyssa Mastromonaco's "Who Thought This Was A Good Idea?" and Rosemarie Terenzio's "Fairy Tale Interrupted". Both good books regarding being an assistant to power.

What about Peggy Grande’s performance did you like?

No one could have told her story with such eloquence and heartfelt love for President Reagan as the woman that lived it herself. This book is a gift to all of us who loved President Reagan and who love hearing how great he was and that he had someone so wonderful to take care of him and Mrs. Reagan.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

When Ms. Grande is heartfelt about seeing the president for the last time and how hard it was to say goodbye to someone she so loved. She had you right there, right in that back yard with her. I tear up now just writing the review. When you tear up in describing the emotion, you know it hit home!

Any additional comments?

A truly fantastic read that should be considered for History classes. A gift.

Best personal book on working with a president!

Enjoyable read. Hard not to get emotional at times. Author was able to live and experience what most Americans felt robbed of and that is the remaining years of Reagans life. He had a way of making you feel as though he was an old friend. I remember wanting a glimpse into his life in his final years. This book brought closure to those last years.

Great insight to Reagan's post presidency

I am always eager to read books of the man I considered to be one of the most inspiring men of our age, Ronald Reagan. Not just for his politics but for his human decency and the quality of his humanity. This book did not disappoint, it was very moving and reinforced what I had already known about this great world leader. Thank you, Peggy, for taking the time to write this book and give us such wonderful insight in a close personal way. I realized at the end I still miss him.

It was a blessing to read of Reagan"s authentic integrity. Thank you, Penny! As a fan of Ronald Reagan, but one who never got to meet him personally, it was wonderful to listen to Penny's heartfelt telling of 10 years with the Reagans!

Felt like I was Reagan's Assistant!

As an author with two books on Audible myself, and two about to be published on Audible, I admire those listens that keep you engaged and captivated. The President Will See You Now did just that! I had the honor of shaking President Reagan's hand and meeting him with Nancy at his side, backstage in St. Louis when he was the Republican nominee in 1980. I watched our country that was a laughing stock of other countries after Iran took and held American hostages; I watched interest rates climb to 21%, and no hope of any future for our country - until President Reagan took office and gave us a vision of what we could become as a nation. Not only did he create that optimism, but he also took us there with his actions. The author's firsthand account solidifies my admiration for President Reagan. I worked with many Secret Service agents over the years and they all admired him because of how he made them feel. The author's book confirms who President Reagan was. Thank you to the author for your service to our President and giving us a peek behind the curtain that few will ever know on one of our greatest U.S. presidents.

It was interesting and fast paced, started at a good point and ended with the Death of the President. I enjoyed the book.

What did you like best about this story?

Peggy, gave a view from just outside the office of the President, a better look than an attempt write about what the President was thinking.

What about Peggy Grande’s performance did you like?

As the writer and reader I got a better view of the person Peggy is. She was a loyal employee of the President.
