Publisher's summary

She has a secret to keep. But will she give her heart away?

Lucy Banning may live on the exclusive Prairie Avenue among Chicago's rich and famous, but her heart lies elsewhere. Expected to marry an up-and-coming banker from a respected family, Lucy fears she will be forced to abandon her charity work and squeeze herself into the mold of the well-dressed wife who spends most of her time and money redecorating. When she meets Will, an unconventional young architect who is working on plans for the upcoming 1893 World's Fair, Lucy imagines a life lived on her own terms.

Can she break away from her family's expectations? And will she ever be loved for who she truly is?

Get swept away into the lavish world of Chicago's high society as Olivia Newport brings to life an age of glitz and grandeur, stark social contrasts, and one woman who dares to cross class lines for what she believes.

Enjoyable historical fiction read!

Which scene was your favorite?

My favorite scene was when Lucy is able to see her former fiance as a person in need and look beyond her own injustices in order to help him. It was kind of an unexpected twist to the story considering the time period.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Not really. It was more of a comfy, cozy read rather than a page turner. Nothing at all wrong with that. Who has time these days to sit down and read (or listen to) a book in one sitting?

Any additional comments?

Author did a great job of tying in several different story elements such as the beginning of the feminist movement and mental illness.

Tame and sweet

I did enjoy this book, don't get me wrong. I just found it tame and sweet. A bit of intrigue and a plot to harm, romance and caring for others, but it seemed to lack a 'get up and go' element to make it exciting.
The narrator was quite good and worked nicely with the story.
I think this author can do better with a more editing of a stronger nature to make her stories 'pop' as her ideas and concepts are good, but they came out bland in the telling.
