About this listen

The Civil War left its mark on Dr. John Turner. He turns his back on medicine and sees his unexpected inheritance in England as an opportunity to start over. But he never imagines how God intends to use his new role as lord of Ashford Hall or the beautiful woman he finds there to ease his troubled soul.

A tragic loss led Penelope Howard to bury her heart and dreams in her work for the Hall and the village of Woodley. But the arrival of the new heir stirs not only her discarded longings but her compassion as well. What burden does he carry that he can't accept that grace covers the darkest of sins?

A deadly epidemic sweeps through Woodley revealing secrets which threaten everything. The doctor faces a choice: leave or dare to believe what the Lord whispers through the woman John has come to love.

No one is beyond redemption.

This was a rather slow story for the most part. Nice to listen to to go off to sleep. The reader had a pleasant voice, but annoying cadence to the reading at times. It was kind of like a Jane Austen type of story— lots of talking, but without the sparkle and humor of Austen’s writing. It did address some serious life issues and kept my interest enough that I listened to the end. I would never use a credit to buy it, but as after read it wasn’t bad.

Sweet story, slightly annoyingly read

The story itself was engaging and sweet. The narration, however, was horrendous. It was robotic in cadence and lifeless in tone. The same inflection was given rather the character was happy, angry, or forlorn. I bumped the speed up to 1.1x and that helped a little but this narrator definitely exemplifies the difference between just reading a story and performing a story.

Good in spite of narrator

The story was touching and interesting with some unexpected twists but the narrator was awkward and made it hard to follow at times.

This book deals with humans that sin and fall into sin, and their experiences with grace. I thoroughly enjoyed the plot line, and was even surprised by some of the outcomes. Good read.

Very enjoyable

A quick story...fast moving, and ended right! In today's world, a story that ends right is needed very badly.

Very good story line...enjoyed.

The plot wound around itself too many times for my liking, showing the same weaknesses in one of the two main characters over and over. The theme of God's redemptive grace is strong throughout the book. The author included several interesting characters in more minor roles, but again, the focus was on character weaknesses that some overcame and some did not. After hours of repetitive weakness, in a flash at the end of the book, one of the main characters resolved weaknesses through acceptance of mercy and forgiveness. The book was an OK choice from the Plus catalog, but it's not one I would take time to listen to again.

Captivating. My husband and I could not wait to get in the car to drive on our trip to continue listening. Great development of characters and I loved the references to the Bible.

Great book

I enjoyed this book more than expected.
The reader gets to know a lot of characters and the plot is interesting. The storyline felt like it accelerated considerably near the end of the book. I would recommend this read.

The narration was good with different voices and such but I felt that reading was a little flat and some of the acting could have been better. At times the accents seemed a bit off.

*Although the author is sensitive in her portrayal of difficult topics, It’s worth mentioning that there is sensitive content surrounding fertility, rape, disease, high risk pregnancies, and infant death.

Great Plot

Liked the nursing aspect of the story and the strength of faith throughout the story without it being “preachy”. Not the best narrator, but decent.

Christian-friendly love story
