Publisher's summary

If you want to discover the captivating history of the Quakers, then pay attention...

Many other mainline Christians viewed the Quakers as a dangerous sect, so much so that they pressured the British Parliament to pass the Quaker Act of 1662. This act set forth in law the “prescribed form” of prayer and worship as designated by the state. It was a formula that specifically left the traditions of the Quakers out.

Unable to gain acceptance in England, the Quakers would soon leave the place of their origin altogether and try their luck in a brave new world on another continent.

In The Quakers: A Captivating Guide to a Historically Christian Group and How William Penn Founded the Colony of Pennsylvania in British North America, you will discover topics such as:

  • The Quakers Arrive in America
  • William Penn Comes to the Quaker Faith
  • William Penn’s Holy Experiment
  • William Penn, Pennsylvania, and Its Quaker Legacy
  • The State of Quakerism After William Penn
  • Quaker Life During the American Revolution
  • A Time of Great Adjustment
  • The Quakers the Civil War and Its Aftermath
  • Some Modern-Day Quaking in the Making
  • And much, much more!

Excellent little intro into Quakers

I have recently started attending a Quaker meeting on Sundays (church services). We wanted to know more about Quakers, I haven't seen it yet, but he doesn't compose reviews, so I'm signing one for him. He found it to be a quick listen that gave him exactly what he wanted, an intro to the Quakers, their beliefs, and history.

A Charming Look into Quaker History

This author details Quakerism's history from the time of George Fox to the present. Of course, this title does cover every little detail but does share the major developments of this practice. As such, proofreaders will learn how Quakerism operated in the British colonies, Civil War, Civil Rights movement,

Get 10 Commandments right if want to quote

I enjoyed this very much, until it began to get SO judgmental , as CH so often does. when it was talking about modern times. My main problem is that even tho Christ said that loving God & loving others as we love ourselves is THE commandment, it is NOT one of the 10 commandments set forth in the OT, as this book stated. Overall tho, one of CH’s better efforts.

Quaker Ancestry

I have Quaker ancestors and I had some idea of what they endured for their faith, but this book gave me many new insights. It covered their history and present values. I learned a lot.

A fascinating look at The Quaker's.

There were some interesting things about Quakers that I thought about including that they have various offshoots and that they practiced equality between male and female portions from the founding of the sect and that they were necessary for the civil war and the underground railroad.

Very Interesting

I enjoyed listening to this. I’ve always been fascinated with this small group that has had so much influence on abolition, human rights and freedom of speech and religion.

Quaker Oats

This is an excellent initiation to the Quakers and makes the browser aware that the Quaker idea is complex it might resemble at first sight. The writer takes a global approach to the development of the tradition which emphasizes the differences between British and American Quakerism, as well as the Quaker tradition in other parts of the world. British anthologies' strength finds this a little frustrating particularly if they were expecting an introduction that adjusted to British Quakerism.
