About this listen

In a feat of virtuoso storytelling, Anne Rice unleashes Akasha, the queen of the damned, who has risen from a six-thousand-year sleep to let loose the powers of the night. Akasha has a marvelously devious plan to “save” mankind and destroy the vampire Lestat—in this extraordinarily sensual novel of the complex, erotic, electrifying world of the undead.

Critic reviews

“Mesmerizing... a wonderful web of dark-side mythology.” (San Francisco Chronicle)

“With The Queen of the Damned, Anne Rice has created universes within universes, traveling back in time as far as ancient, pre-pyramidic Egypt and journeying from the frozen mountain peaks of Nepal to the crowded, sweating streets of southern Florida.” (Los Angeles Times)

“Imaginative... intelligently written... This is popular fiction of the highest order.” (USA Today)

Finally got a chance to sit down and listen through all of the first three books of
The Vampire Chronicles and I loved them! This one especially since it shifts perspectives unlike the first two which really gives the story amazing depth!

Amazing!

Even though the narrator sounded more like a Russian spy than an ancient vampire queen, it was fine for the most part.

There are just so many characters in this story for one narrator to take on alone. I know it must be difficult for one person to create a unique voice for each character.

This is one of my favorite books in The Vampire Chronicles series and the book is great. You learn how the first vampire was created and how several key characters like Marius, Pandora and Armand came into the story (each of which has their own origins novel).

Don't waste your time watching throw movie of the same name. It was thrown together quickly so the studio wouldn't have to forfeit their claim to Anne Rices novels. It's worse than a SyFy Original Movie and not only cuts out most of the characters, it changes the entire Genesis of the vampire world that Rice created.

It could have been worse

I can't tell you how much this story blew me away. I just got lost in this story and characters. This is absolutely one of my favorite Anne Rice books. Great narrator as well.

Absolutely incredible

I've enjoyed the movie version, but hearing the audio book revealed so much more to the story. I enjoyed the mystery of the twins and the relationship Lestat forms with Akasha. The character development for Akasha was excellent. She's not a pure evil destroyer. She thinks she's good and creating a better world -- just like Lenin, Mao, Pol Pot and so many others who believed their utopia must be founded beside a river of blood.

Great Depth and Characters

I enjoyed the movie, but the novel is so much better. I am so excited to continue the series!

It’s long and has its slow moments but I very much appreciate how everyone’s stories are intertwined. Each chapter reveals a new crossover. It brings depth to the characters and I loved all of it. Highly recommend listening to this book. Be sure to listen to the first two books first though.

Loved this Book
