About this listen
FINALIST: The Audie Awards 2016
Audible Originals brings you a brand new audiobook adaptation of J. Sheridan Le Fanu’s classic gothic novella, Carmilla - starring Rose Leslie (Game of Thrones and Downton Abbey), David Tennant (Doctor Who and Broadchurch) and Phoebe Fox (Life in Squares and The Woman in Black 2: Angel of Death)
One of the very first vampire thrillers, this audio adaptation follows 18-year-old Laura as she recounts the story of her mysterious, intriguing and beautiful house guest Carmilla, who is stranded in the forest after a carriage accident and taken in by Laura’s widowed father. The girls develop a friendship which turns into a passionate meeting of souls. A relationship of vampire and prey, the story is told through Laura’s eyes as she is drawn further into Carmilla’s terrifying world of pleasure and pain.
A masterpiece of erotic Gothic horror, Carmilla encompasses mystery, suspense, forbidden lust, violence...and lots of blood....
Carmilla has been dramatised by Robin Brooks, an actor, dramatist and author who has been working as a playwright for over 25 years. Carmilla was directed by Fiona McAlpine of Allegra Productions for Audible Originals.

Story
The modern audience hasn't had a chance to truly appreciate the unknowing dread that readers would have felt when reading Bram Stoker's original 1897 manuscript. Most modern productions employ campiness or sound effects to try to bring back that gothic tension, but we've tried something different. By returning to Stoker's original storytelling structure - a series of letters and journal entries voiced by Jonathan Harker, Dr. Van Helsing, and other characters - with an all-star cast of narrators, we've sought to recapture its originally intended horror and power.

Story
Laura lives an isolated life with her father, alone in a castle in the Austrian wilderness. When the mysterious Carmilla, a strange and beautiful lady, arrives in the night, no one suspects the supernatural occurrences that follow. But still more unsuspected is the tempestuous romance that blooms between the two young women, and Carmilla’s nightmarish secret. Written 26 years before Stoker’s "Dracula", Carmilla is the original vampire novel. Sheridan Le Fanu combines a chilling Gothic atmosphere with horrifying episodes, boldly exploring the sexual desires of his heroines, and establishing the image of the female vampire.

Very atmospheric & unique!
The dramatization lent a really interesting perspective to the scenes that I really appreciated - it was very different from a typical audiobook, but once I got used to the format it was awesome!

Great version of a classic horror story
I'm a sucker for classic vampire stories, of which this one is a fine specimen. Curious and haunting little mystery with all the tragedy and sexuality that once was associated with the vampires. Audio dramatisation is excellent, really enjoyable. It was hard to pause listening, and even when I had to, I found myself thinking of the story, eager to hear the rest of it.

Not bad just not my thing
I suppose for a lover of history and/or the era of history in which this story takes place, this is a fine book but not exactly what I enjoy. Nothing bad to say here necessarily, the speech was rather dated and the accent at times was hard to understand, but as a period piece that's to be expected. Not displeased to the point of wanting a refund, however it did take me quite awhile to finish it. Indifferent is the word that comes to mind.

Sheridan Le Fanu was a great friend of Bram Stoker and although this story was written long before Dracula, it is easy to see that it influenced Stoker. Great story
