Publisher's summary

This program includes three recipes.

Multiple award-winning author Gigi Pandian is one of the best locked room mystery writers working today. Her newest heroine, Tempest Raj, returns in The Raven Thief, where sliding bookcases, trick tables, and hidden reading nooks hide something much more sinister than the Secret Staircase Construction crew ever imagined.

One murder. Four impossibilities. A fake séance hides a very real crime.

A Macmillan Audio production from Minotaur Books.

Secret Staircase Construction just finished their first project with Tempest Raj officially a part of the team—a classic mystery novel-themed home interior. Their client is now ready to celebrate her new life without her cheating ex-husband, famous mystery author Corbin Colt. First up, a party, and Tempest and Grandpa Ash are invited to the exclusive mock séance to remove any trace of Corbin from the property—for good. It's all lighthearted fun until Corbin's dead body crashes the party.

The only possible suspects are the eight people around the séance table—a circle of clasped hands that wasn't broken. Suspicion quickly falls on Grandpa Ash, the only one with actual blood on him. To prove her beloved grandfather’s innocence, Tempest must figure out what really happened—and how—or Ash will be cooking his delectable Indian and Scottish creations nevermore.

Critic reviews

“Excellent. . . Pandian’s clever solution matches the challenge she sets for her endearingly imperfect lead. This brilliant homage to classic golden age authors such as John Dickson Carr augurs well for a long series run.”–Publishers Weekly (starred review)

“Tempest applies her knowledge of the tricks of the trade to the puzzle of Corbin’s death, highlighting the howdunit as much as the whodunit.”–Kirkus Reviews

"A true standout. . . Pandian has done it again: The Raven Thief conjures up the perfect balance of magic, mystery, and mayhem. I couldn't stop reading!"—Juliet Blackwell

The trick of illusions

I enjoy this book with all its mysteries and twist and turns. I hope someday to be able to afford carpenters to come and put a special reading nook in my home. I also enjoy all the references to many very good books. Thank you.

Delightful Mystery

This second book in the Secret Staircase Mystery series and while maybe not as great as the first book, is still a really fun, cozy mystery romp. This was full of fun antics from a full blown seance to a b&e. This book has all of the elements of a classic locked room murder mystery and that is my favorite mystery trope. The solution to the mystery was really clever and kept me guessing on some aspects until the end.

Overall, these books are delightful, and I look forward to the next book in the series.

Enjoyable spring break listen!

Gigi Pandian has created yet another intriguing cast of characters and a mystery that is engaging and not predictable. It would be easy to follow this book without reading the first in the series, but there is a larger plotline developing that justifies going back to read the first Hidden Staircase Mystery. The story, themes, language, and minimal violence make this an easy listen for both adults and adolescents.

Thoroughly engrossing

I like the complexity of the story. I don’t try to guess who done it. I like the intro of characters especially the ones that will be introduced in the future.

Narration Is Awful

The story is okay but the narration so uneven that I couldn't finish the story.

Not a bad series but a bit slow.

We first meet Tempest in the Accidental Alchemist series. She was portrayed as being a leather wearing, bad-ass, surly, and frightening magician.
The Tempest in this spin-off series seems to me to be completely different. It’s a bit confusing.

Who is the raven?

Tempest attempts to protect her grandfather after a man dies at a seance. The mystery was twisty and interesting. I like the narrator.
