Publisher's summary

"With a remarkable ability to subtly distinguish myriad characters, Lucy Patterson masterfully narrates this thriller...Her timing and delivery, including subtle pauses and sighs, are transfixing." (AudioFile Magazine, Earphones Award winner)

From Yrsa Sigurdardottir, author of the international best-selling thriller The Silence of the Sea, winner of the 2015 Petrona Award for Best Scandinavian Crime Novel, comes the follow-up to The Legacy.

Vaka sits, regretting her choice of coat, on the cold steps of her new school. Her father appears to have forgotten to pick her up, her mother has forgotten to give her this week’s pocket money, and the school is already locked for the day. Grown-ups, she decides, are useless.

With no way to call home, she resigns herself to waiting on the steps until her father remembers her. When a girl approaches, Vaka recognizes her immediately from class and from her unusual appearance: two of her fingers are missing. The girl lives at the back of the school, on the other side of a high fence, and Vaka asks to call her father from the girl's house. That afternoon is the last time anyone sees Vaka.

Detective Huldar and child psychologist Freyja are called in. Soon, they find themselves at the heart of another shocking case.

A Great Police Procedural

This was such a well written book. with a few twists. I at one point thought I knew everything that had happened and who did it. then realized quickly that was not the case at all. my thoughts changed a few times. such a great read. Yrsa outdid herself.

Good story. Great narration.

I like Yrsa Sigurdardottir's stories. The overall plot was engaging. The subplot between the two main characters felt contrived however which made it unbelievable to me. But that is a small detail. What I absolutely love about Yrsa's writing is the way she paints a scene with words and kudos to the translator for capturing the atmosphere. It drew me right into the scene. Narrator Lucy Paterson did a wonderful job pacing the tempo, capturing the mood, and giving voice to the characters. She made a good story great.

Exciting Book

This is a fast paced page turner book. I would recommend it. I also enjoy the flawed but loveable character Hulda.

difficult subject, very well done

love the narrator. very tough story, dealt with very carefully. pedophilia is so unthinkable...hard to listen to, but worth the pain.

A stunning example of "See something, say something."

What I treasure most about Yrsa's books is the way her main characters never Back Down from what is right. This storyline, like the first, is incredibly exceptional in its own way. I loved the continuation of character development and little quirks, I felt strongly for holdar/Huldar.

Boring and prescriptive

Perhaps I've just read too much by this author, but I found this book to be boring, repetitive, and not creative at all.
