Publisher's summary

What if your worst enemy was your only hope?

When a 15-year-old girl fails to make it home after school, DI Heather Filson believes she’s dealing with just another teenage runaway.

The girl’s grandfather, a notorious Glasgow gangster, disagrees. Convinced one of his underworld enemies has grabbed her, he’s prepared to bathe the city in blood in order to bring his princess home.

But as the days pass and the evidence mounts, Heather starts to fear that they’re both wrong and that a brutal killer from the past has returned.

A killer who once stalked the streets of her hometown, preying on vulnerable young victims.

A killer that DI Heather Filson is uniquely familiar with....

Uncover the secrets of The One That Got Away in the first book in a brand-new Scottish crime fiction series by JD Kirk, author of the multimillion-selling DCI Jack Logan novels.

Only one concern

As usual, this is a great JD Kirk book. However, I was constantly thinking why is Heather getting into all these scrapes? She just seems to make a lot of really stupid decisions. Of course, without those decisions, there would be no book, but I did have a little trouble getting past your poor decisions… the young girl who is her unwanted attendant is a character that should be developed in further books, and possibly become a main character. She was the best thing in the book, although it was all great.

JD Kirk just gets better and better

Great new series, wonderful characters, perfect narration . The story was engaging throughout and the ending (including whodunnit) was very satisfying. I want more of the Heather series!!

Another great story by JD Kirk

I was a little weary since Angus King wasn’t narrating this, but Cathleen McCarron was brilliant!

Another Knockout Series!

I’ll admit it - I wasn’t excited about a series about Heather Filson. She was not…endearing in her previous appearances. HOWEVER, this book goes into her backstory, and the story itself is outstanding. I’m off buy book 2, This Little Piggy. Please, JD Kirk, write fast!

Kirk nails it AGAIN!

Heather Filson is such a dislikable character in the much-loved Jack Logan series. I mean hatable, really. I avoided starting this series for a long while for that very reason. But … I really was in JD Kirk withdrawal. So finally I warily took the plunge into this series. And THIS BOOK WAS GREAT, all the way around! Can’t wait to start the next in series.
P.S. I don’t hate Heather anymore. Great character!

Gritty storyline, memorable characters.

While parts seem a bit slow, the characters of this cadre did develop as fitting partners to the Logan series. Both voice actors are excellent and rich toned with character variety. This story line did have me guessing, which is unusual. I shall continue this series!!

How does he do it?

JD Kirk took one of the most hated characters from the DCI Logan series and turned her into my new favorite DI. Cathleen McCarron delivers a superb performance. Looking forward to the next installment!

Love the JD Kirk Universe

Heather is a complicated character that makes her a realistic heroine of this story. It keeps you guessing, had the humor you’d expect, and included characters you can love. I am hoping for more of Heather and Ace.
