Publisher's summary

“A redemption story, an adventure story, and perhaps above all, a love story.” (Nate Blakeslee, New York Times best-selling author of American Wolf)

The Druid Peak Pack was the most famous wolf pack in Yellowstone National Park, and maybe even in the world.

This is the dramatic true story of its remarkable leader, Wolf 21 - whose compassion and loyalty challenges commonly held beliefs about alpha males.

In this compelling follow-up to the national best seller The Rise of Wolf 8, Rick McIntyre profiles one of Yellowstone’s most revered alpha males, Wolf 21. Leader of the Druid Peak Pack, Wolf 21 was known for his unwavering bravery, his unusual benevolence (unlike other alphas, he never killed defeated rival males), and his fierce commitment to his mate, the formidable Wolf 42.

Wolf 21 and Wolf 42 were attracted to each other the moment they met - but Wolf 42’s jealous sister interfered viciously in their relationship. After an explosive insurrection within the pack, the two wolves came together at last as leaders of the Druid Peak Pack, which dominated the park for more than 10 years.

McIntyre recounts the pack’s fascinating saga with compassion and a keen eye for detail, drawing on his many years of experience observing Yellowstone wolves in the wild. His outstanding work of science writing offers unparalleled insight into wolf behavior and Yellowstone’s famed wolf reintroduction project. It also offers a love story for the ages.

“Like Thomas McNamee, David Mech, Barry Lopez, and other literary naturalists with an interest in wolf behavior, McIntyre writes with both elegance and flair, making complex biology and ethology a pleasure to read. Fans of wild wolves will eat this one up.” (Kirkus, starred review)

Critic reviews

“McIntyre’s stories of mutual aid among the wolves will remind us that all life is poised in an ever-shifting dance of competition and co-operation. We can all learn some lessons from McIntyre’s beloved beasts.” (The Vancouver Sun)

“Like Darwin, McIntyre is an inclusionist and is thus able to enter the hearts and minds of wolves, providing us with a consummately rounded picture of their lives. Along the way, he creates a fully realized world that stands whole and sublime alongside our far more troubled human one.” (Mountain Journal)

“Wolves have always been majestic creatures, and The Reign of Wolf 21...beautifully illustrates this. [G]reat for nature lovers or people interested in learning more about wolves and wolf behavior.” (The Yakima Herald)

A Spectacular Story

The Reign of Wolf 21 lived up to the greatness of the first book in the series about Wolf 8. It is definitely appropriate for teens through those in their 100’s. It is heartfelt. occasionally it is hard to follow which wolf is doing what, there are so many reported on, but that ads to depth of the story which appears to be ever so accurate and precise. This is only the third book I’ve read about wolves, the first being Romeo. No doubt, the final two books in the series by Rick McIntyr will soon arrive for more thrilling and educational information on Wolves!

Wonderfully told. A love story of the best kind at its core.

There are super heroes in this story, not least of whom is Rick McIntyre. These wolves will stay with us. Their bond. Their impact on the Park. The Druid alphas are models for humanity to follow.

I’m sitting here crying about animals that died almost twenty years ago

And despite that, I don’t regret it at all. And I feel even more honored that my life is guarded by a descendent of animals like 42 (I have a medical alert service dog)

Great story, dry reading.

Such a touch story told by someone who clear loves these wolves. I wish the narrator gave it more emotion.

"A Feeling of Being There Myself"

I created an Image book in "Dead of Winter" Yellow Stone (Three Gates) 2020. Blessed crossing paths with a Pack of Wolf's on an Elk kill...I counted seven Adults (two solid black) & heard pup's crying. The largest Male all black was exceptionally large & very muscular. I was impressed by all of their overall larger body's & taller hight structure than anticipated. The all black Male Wolf & me had a special bond staring each other down. Snow storm/30 below/about 30 to 40 yards apart.

Enlightening and inspiring book and series

I read one Rick McIntyre book and decided to pick up another, and then another. This book was excellent and so are the others that I have read. I recommend them all and think you will get hooked on the Rick McIntyre books as I have. As humans, we can learn a lot from the wolves!

I could not stop listening

This book brought me through a range of emotions. I can’t begin to describe my gratitude for Rick McIntyre sharing his experience.
I do not want to give the ending away but I was in tears. ( multiple times) during this book.
Thank you,
Rachael

21’s stoic nature and his love of his life partner, 42

I thoroughly enjoyed the epic tale of this amazing wolf.

My only wish is that we could hear Rick narrate the book himself. He has such a passion for these animals that I think it would make the story that much more impactful.

Thank you for these books, Rick. You are unique and gifted individual.
