Publisher's summary

In the final book of Shelby Gallagher‘s A Great State trilogy, Julie and Ned embark on their perilous journey from Colorado to Pierce Point, Washington, where Julie will rescue - and adopt - baby Addison. Julie hopes to save her from the danger that is only growing more extreme as society continues to collapse, and Addison can no longer be safely cared for by her biological parents.

Meanwhile, unrest in Oregon continues to intensify and violence in the city becomes deadly as cultures clash and lawlessness begins to rule. Strange murders are happening regularly, and the guilty parties will go to great lengths in order to preserve their freedoms. The Rescue chillingly shows the lengths people will go to, so they can survive and thrive in times of chaos and uncertainty.

Will Julie and Ned survive the mission through the mountains so that they can save an innocent life and help usher in a new generation of self-reliant survivors? What will become of Julie’s ex-husband once he surrenders his parental rights? Will Julie’s incompetent brother make it through the collapse on his own? Will the violence that is overtaking Oregon make its way to the Great States?

good follow up to previous books

I like this story line and loved books 1 and 2. In book 3 it takes a whole different group of people in and tells more about Portland but I didn't love that aspect of the story. It seemed a bit distracting to the original story line and group of people. The series overall is really good!

A hard look at dystopia

Book one set the stage, book two eased you into the grimy world of abuse under the guise of compassion. Book 3, The Rescue, maniacally careens through a world with a veneer of rule of law. New characters emerged to prey on the willfully ignorant. Ned and Julie travel to pierce point, a location familiar to fans of the 299 days series to visit Judge Grant Matson and a few characters from 299 days, and maybe provide a peek at 299 days 2nd edition. The Rescue cannot end this series though, it leaves you wanting to know what happened to the murderous gay robber, the Muslim who isn't what he seems. Will Ned, Julie and family stay in Smokey Flats? I have a feeling Pierce Point may show up in another volume. Shelby, you can't leave us with a happy ending because that is not what a collapse looks like (grin)

Great ending

Loved seeing the characters develop through out the books. A great ending to the story. Understand why the drama about Portland is in it but maybe a little over done in that area. Thank you for finishing the story.

LOVE this series!

This series is one of my favorites because I believe this is how things are actually going to go down! Also, I am from Oregon and love how on point Shelby is about Portland :)

Very plausible story given current political environment

This was an excellent series. Well, planned out with the exception of Candy and Patrick story. That just seemed shoved in for no real reason so it wasn’t as cohesive, but the rest of the book was well read well written and a good twist at the end.

Another great book by "Shelby"!!

Love the way this book ties other aspects of people's lives together. There's about 3 or 4 subplots that address how different things go down.

Great story!

I drove down 26 miles out of the high Uintah mountains just to get a phone signal on the off chance “The Rescue” was out on Audible. It was!! Took forever to download but so worth it. Ripped through it in one day while fishing. What a great read. There was a side story that I’m not quite sure of the reason it was included unless there is a book four. (Hopefully). So worth the back breaking wash boardy roads to download.

I devoured this story.

Honestly, it was refreshing to hear about this subject from a womans perspective. I love the post collapse subject, but sometimes it tends to be so much about us testosterone fueled shoot'm up guys. This is a real look at so many things we don't think of and an intriguing story too. I really like how it is briefly tied into the 299 Days series; just enough and doesn't rely on it. I really wish there was more to this story. Once you go through this trilogy, you will want more.

A Great State - The Rescue

I was really looking forward to the finality of this trilogy. However, I was a little confused by some of the surrounding story involving the Gay Nightclub killings. They were almost not related to our story at all. That whole story could have easily been left out. But then again, that's why I'm not a writer. The transfer of Addison from Steve Atwood to Julie Atwood was a great lead up. I wasn't sure if they'd get it done, but they did. The idea to use some of the characters from 299 Days was genius and how they prepared for the trek from Pierce Point back to Colorado. The love story between Ned and Julie took a while and you could see that they were getting closer and closer. That was a nice touch. I felt for Ned every time he talked to and with Julie. He was truly in love and it showed when he selfishly trekked with Julie to rescue Addison. I would have liked to see a wedding (maybe not a shotgun wedding, but one attended with AR's and Ak's), but maybe that's in a future book. Keep up the good work Shelby.

Excellent read

All 3 books in the series are excellent, I would recommend it to anyone but especially to that special person in your life to nudge them into a prepared mindset. Shelby did an excellent job, in my mind, of portraying a woman’s view. It gave me as a man a better perspective of how my wife views my obsession.
