About this listen

As a prepper, Grayson Rowan was prepared for almost anything.

Well, anything other than being totally alone when the shinola hits the fan.

While he sat back and watched the United States rattle swords with Korea, play chicken with Russia, and strong-arm China, he felt sure if the lights went out that he and his family would be ready and safe—whether it was due to a natural disaster or a man-made event. They had everything they needed at their homestead.

What he wasn’t prepared for was his family not being home if it ever happened.

Olivia Rowan is with her sisters, Gabby and Emma, on a girls-only trip to Myrtle Beach. When chaos erupts and there’s no gas, their journey home is a nightmare, filled with predators and danger—and apparently, Olivia hadn’t learned a thing her husband tried to teach her.

When your neighbors run out of water and turn on each other, what will you do?

Jake, a country boy mechanic, never believed in Teotwawki, but he’d heard his brother-in-law preach about it many times. He knew what to do, but he didn’t prepare. He lazily left it all up to Grayson—he was the prepper after all. When catastrophe strikes, will he continue to keep his head stuck in the sand while his clueless neighbors destroy each other and his wife is stuck out on the road, or will he stand up and fight like a man?

And if you’re alone? Bug in, or bug out?

Graysie Rowan, a freshman at University, just wants to go home. When no word comes from the government and the state capital is overrun with looters, chaos, and mayhem, the college administration puts the students on lockdown. But her dad, Grayson, had prepared her for this. Now, if she can only remember what it was he said to do.

If they want to survive this post-apocalyptic event, they’ll all have to learn to fight like a man.

The end came not with boots on the ground, nuclear weapons, or an EMP. It snuck in with a quiet clatter at the back door and flipped the switch, covering the states in darkness and sending this family on three divergent paths that ultimately lead home. When they collide in this surreal and gripping family drama, it won’t be without bullets and bloodshed.

We all need to prepare

The story and characters were great and very insightful as to how and why we all need to prepare.

The story started out great. All the characters just seemed to make stupid decisions. No common sense amongst all of them. couldn't finish the story

Excellent SHTF listen

First off, Kevin Pierce is one of the best narrators, if not the best, particularly in this genre of books. His performance here was fantastic, as always.

The books themselves are very well written, and keep you on the edge of your seat. I devoured all four books over a few days of doing a project at my homestead.

Really enjoyed the series. And Kevin Pierce is the BEST narrator! Looking forward to more from this author.

Very Entertaining

The storyline was great, I had nights when I didn't want to sleep and kept extending the timer.

Great narration. Weak writing. Tactically silly.

I struggled to get through this series. Weak writing, bad character consistency, jumpy story telling, ridiculously implausible scenarios, absurd tactical writing. Recommend trying better authors in this genre.

Hard to follow

It jumps around too much for me and doesn't have a good flow like a Franklin Horton book

Objective Feedback

Dive into the down and dirty what I liked and what I didn't. Listened to all 4 books and I want to provide honest feedback that isn't based off of personal cognitive bias.

Story - Starts off well, character development is a bit lacking, but the lack of character background doesn't take away from the book. Scenario is believable. Description of vacations, college, family in different locations, all believable. Books 1-3 are realistic without touching the sci fi piece to much. The 4th book gets a little bit out of touch with the first three. The 4th book is worth the read, but has some unrealistic components.

Story content - Laughing, crying, anger, despair, rejoice, empathy, etc are captured well. This book hits the "feelings" part nicely.

Narration - Did well, not great, but nothing to steer people away from or write home about. Decent job overall.

Characters - Understand that the back story isn't really there, which is fine, the author did enough "in the now" content with bits of history to support decisions and thought process. Characters are unique, and the policitcal stuff others mention in their reviews are silly. If all the characters had the same opinion it would be boring. There isn't as much anti trump stuff as what others are claiming.

Plot - Mostly believable, book 4 has a issue that others have commented on, didn't bother me to much. Cyber attacks are real, but if you are a true cyber person you will be able to find holes in the book versus what it would take to perform such an attack IRL. The author did not dive into details on the attack, rather focused on "it happened now what".

Personal subjectivity - I liked this book. It had the feels, the tension, struggle, overcoming, hardship, unexpected turns, and creative scenarios. I did NOT like that every chapter seemed to end in a cliffhanger. The entire series gave me a "Look at this book, see I (the author) already made it so someone can turn it into a TV series" vibe. I enjoy continuous reading, but when every chapter is a cliffhanger, and the moves to a different scenario, then a cliff hanger, etc it would sometimes be 3-5 chapters before it came back to the main story line. I got use to it eventually, but it was irksome.

If you purchase the set for a credit, it's worth it. If you buy them individually....well I wouldn't.

I enjoyed this, and only wrote a review because of how much subjective negative comments there were, and I felt it was unfair. I tried here to dispute those reviews, and I hope this helps.
