About this listen

Anna Pigeon has been a ranger with the National Park Service for many years, but she had a very different life before tragedy sent her west seeking something new. Now Nevada Barr finally tells the previously untold story of Anna’s first foray into the wild, and the case that helped shape her into the ranger she became.

Thirty-five years old, fresh off the bus from New York City, and nursing a shattered heart, Anna Pigeon takes a decidedly unglamorous job as a seasonal employee of the Glen Canyon National Recreational Area. On her day off, she goes hiking into the park never to return. Her co-workers think she’s simply moved on - her cabin is cleaned out and her things gone. Anna herself wakes up, trapped at the bottom of a dry natural well, naked, without supplies and no clear memory of how she got into this situation.

As she slowly pieces together her memory, it soon becomes clear that someone has trapped her there, in an inescapable prison, and that no one knows that she is even missing. Plunged into a landscape and a plot she is unfit and untrained to handle, Anna Pigeon must muster the courage, strength, and will to live that she didn’t even know she still possessed in order to survive, outwit, and triumph.

Joyce Bean did a good job narrating the story. This is book 17 in the Anna Pigeon Series but this book goes back and explains how she became a Ranger. Barr provides beautiful description of the Lake Powell National Park, felt like I was there. The story provides lots of suspense and nail biting action that keeps one glued to the IPod.

I usually like Anna Pigeon stories, but it just too hard to follow one horrible situation after another that she manages to get out of... and a bit too dark for me.

Must suspend disbelief

Well Narrate. I got used to Ms. Rosenblat, I like Ms. Bean's work as well. But also, Wow! The beginning, the Prequel. How'd she end up so badass? Well, it wasn't easy. Also, I'd just like to hang out with Anna and Jenny. Sexual tension aside, someone as smart and with as much bad-ass-potential. Fun listen. Hard to turn off. So many spots where I was tensing for a blow! Crazy Tensr!

Well Narrated, Crazy Tense

Love her books, all the national parks come alive to the reader! And all have the twist &n turns of a mystery. This books goes back in time from the last book in the series...now I'm waiting for more of her future books!

Would you consider the audio edition of The Rope to be better than the print version?

I enjoyed the audio version, the narrator is perfect for the characters and creates a Lake Powell not to be forgotten.

What other book might you compare The Rope to and why?

I read most of Nevada Barrs books but what was great about this one is that it is a prequel - the story of how Anne Pigeon decided to become a Ranger.

What does Joyce Bean bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Joyce is able (in voice) to both create the scene and also give a clear emotional sense of each of the characters. She is easy to listen to and follow.

Any additional comments?

What I enjoyed best about this book is the crazy twists and turns. It was nearly impossible until the end to understand the "why" and "who" of the mystery. The con is that it is hard to believe this many unfortunate things could happen to one person in so short a time.

A slow start but great twists and turns

From wanting to befriend and trust most people in the beginning to growing to recognize real darkness in others, the story captures Anna as she goes from grieving widow trying to rebuild her life into the hard and independent woman she becomes later in the series.

Origin Story

It took some time to adjust to the new narrator and her mispronounciation of certain words.

My favorite part of this book was the firm stance it took on sexual assault never being the victims fault. Nevada did good!

A must for any APPR fan.

Another great Anna Pigeon mystery
