About this listen

The critically acclaimed New York Times bestseller and the basis for the Academy Award- and Golden Globe-nominated film starring Steve McQueen.

As a spirit of nationalism inspired by Chiang Kai-shek's leadership begins to sweep through China, the river gunship San Pablo is ordered to patrol the region and to protect US citizens. Jack Holman is a machinist aboard the San Pablo, who has joined the navy in order to avoid jail time. Because he is so fiercely independent, Jake remains a relative loner and is uncomfortable with navy protocol and discipline.

Holman's independent mind chafes against military hierarchy and also ensures that he does not share his shipmates' disdain for the Chinese. Instead, Holman is fascinated with the culture and the people that surround him and develops emotional bonds that prove quite thorny when the circumstances become more tumultuous and more dire.

The perspective of The Sand Pebbles is therefore both panoramic as well as personal. Like Lawrence of Arabia, the tension explored here is between the self as individual against the broader spectrum of social and historical forces against which we are all measured.

Great mechanical details

Absolutely enjoyed the level of detail that was given to the steam engine. The description of its inner workings made it seem like it was another living creature. Very well written book with throughly developed characters.

My favorite Naval story

This became an Academy Award winning film, but of course is a better story as a novel. Well done shipmate!

Excellent story

Well written, and well narrated. The film had always been a favorite. Finding the novel a significant upgrade on the experience.

Good Story

The narrative dragged a bit in the middle but it was well done and I enjoyed it overall.

Better Than The Great Movie

I would rate this with The Hunters as a great American military novel. The performance is excellent

Great Audio Book

The narrator did an excellent job. I loved the movie and really enjoyed how this book expanded on the details. I really wanted the book to keep going because I enjoyed it that much.

The narration was THE BEST I’ve ever heard!

The Robert Wise produced and directed film version of this novel was my first introduction to this story. It is my favorite film and it would not exist without this novel. So often people proclaim the novel to be better than the movie. In this case, both versions complement the other. The movie is a powerful synopsis of the novel fueled by the strength of the cast, music, and adapted screenplay. Many times as I listened to the novel, dialogue and scenes found in the film were nearly identical but often with the twist of different characters or altered chronology. This story is an epic tragedy on the scale of Romeo and Juliet. It touches me like no other form of art ever has. If you’ve never encountered this story, don’t stop with the novel, include the film. Both versions are great storytelling at its finest!

Hard to get through

The story outstays it’s welcome and I wasn’t a fan of the narrator. Wouldn’t recommend this book to friends or family.
