Publisher's summary

"What raises Deighton's genre to art is not only his absorbing characters but his metaphoric grace, droll wit, command of technical detail . . . and sure sense of place." -Washington Post

Peter and Paul Winter, sons of a German businessman, are bonded by childhood trauma. When they grow apart, only to meet again under the shadow of the Third Reich-and then again at the Nuremburg trials-they find themselves divided by war and differing ideals.

In this expansive, rich, and deeply tragic portrait of a German family from 1899 to 1945, Len Deighton brilliantly weaves a portrait of the fortunes of two sons, and a nation, over half a century.

I really enjoyed this saga

I really enjoy Deighton’s intertwining of history and fiction. I found his development of characters in this story excellent.

Great sweep of 20th century German history

Interesting story of two brothers and their different experiences of the two world wars. Deighton’s work is always well researched. I found the characterization of the younger brother Paulie wanting however. All of his Nazi, Gestapo, SS activities seem to have no moral effect on him. This is simply not credible. And please, Audible, leave some space between the book’s end and other notes. It really spoils the ending when the narrator hardly takes a breath at the end to go on with authors’ notes etc.
