Publisher's summary

South Carolina, 1908:

Scullery maid Lucy Forman has been serving at Worthington House since the day she turned 16. Now, at 19, she is asked to take over the duties of gathering chicken eggs out by the stables. It doesn't take Lucy long to notice there's more to see at the chicken house than just chickens.

When stable boy James Parker notices the young redhead in place of Bossy Betty, he suddenly takes a deep interest in repairing loose boards down at the coop. Falling through the wall of the hen-house was not his intention, but when he sees the cute maiden on the other side, he can't help but fall for Lucy.

Downton Abbey fans who are intrigued by what goes on below the stairs, will love following the antics of Lucy and the fun, feisty kitchen maid, Lizzy. Who, but Lizzy, could talk Lucy into sneaking down a six-story fire escape to go to a dance?

Mischief and young love are in store....

Listeners will get to decide who really lives life to its fullest; the well-to-do Gentry, or those who serve them.

Sweet Historical Romance

This was a quick listen and very entertaining. Although it is part of a series, it can easily be enjoyed as a standalone. Scullery maids were the lowest ranked servants and I enjoyed this short glimpse into the life of Lucy. Her romance with James the stable boy was sweet and I loved how she took pleasure in the smallest of freedoms. The story was beautifully written and the narration was excellent. I would recommend this.

Great Read

The Scullery Maid's Day Off (Below the Stairs #2) was a good read by Renee Riva. It is 1908 and Lucy is a scullery maid working at Worthington House since she was sixteen. She now has started gathering the chicken eggs by the stables. James is the stable boy who has caught the eye of Lucy. This was a fun and quick read by Renee Riva, I absolutely loved reading James and Lucy's story.

Christian Historical Romance

What a wonderful story! I loved how, even in the drudgery of servant life, these two continually worshipped God and found true love between a scullery maid and a stable boy!
The narrator did a wonderful job but there is a editing issue with a short section repeated.

The Scullery Maid's Day Off

Renee Riva had given us a short sweet period piece. I loved Lucy's optimism and her outlook on life. It warms my heart when someone like that has a chance at a happily ever after.

Lovely Historic Story

Any additional comments?

This is a short story in the style of Upstairs/Downstairs and Downton Abbey. It is about a American scullery maid who works in a southern mansion during the early 1900s. It is delightful story about her life in the house and interactions with the other servants in the day to day goings on and the budding romance with the stable boy. I see from other reviews that it is the 2nd book in the series but it stands on its own. I enjoyed the story so much that I would like to listen to the first book. I hope Renee Riva continues this series.

Loved This Sweet Historical Romance

Lucy is a maidservant in South Carolina, circa 1900. Her life is pretty dreary until she is assigned the task of collecting eggs from the chickens. Stableboy, James Parker hears a girl speaking kindly to the chickens, an obvious change from the boisterous, confrontational Betty.

The mutual attraction is instantaneous and Renée Riva takes us on a wonderful excursion, with all of the wholesome innocence enjoyed by so many. This was an absolute pleasure to listen to and I look forward to other books by this author.

Cait Frizzle is a great voice performer, perfect for this book.

Credit worthy? I would buy this book outright, as it is less than $5.
