Publisher's summary

Bhima, the unforgettable main character of Thrity Umrigar’s beloved national best seller, The Space Between Us, returns in this triumphant sequel - a poignant and compelling novel in which the former servant struggles against the circumstances of class and misfortune to forge a new path for herself and her granddaughter in modern India.

Poor and illiterate, Bhima had faithfully worked for the Dubash family, an upper-middle-class Parsi household, for more than 20 years. Yet after courageously speaking the truth about a heinous crime perpetrated against her own family, the devoted servant was cruelly fired. The sting of that dismissal was made more painful coming from Sera Dubash, the temperamental employer who had long been Bhima’s only confidante. A woman who has endured despair and loss with stoicism, Bhima must now find some other way to support herself and her granddaughter, Maya.

Bhima’s fortunes take an unexpected turn when her path intersects with Parvati, a bitter, taciturn older woman. The two acquaintances soon form a tentative business partnership, selling fruits and vegetables at the local market. As they work together, these two women seemingly bound by fate grow closer, each confessing the truth about their lives and the wounds that haunt them. Discovering her first true friend, Bhima pieces together a new life, and together, the two women learn to stand on their own.

A dazzling story of gender, strength, friendship, and second chances, The Secrets Between Us is a powerful and perceptive novel that brilliantly evokes the complexities of life in modern India and the harsh realities faced by women born without privilege as they struggle to survive.

Amazing Friendship

Bit of a slow start and confusing characters, but once the key character made a new decisiona nd changed her lifes path, things started flowing.
beautiful characters in a very unusual friendship in Mumbai slums..I could feel the pain of the women, and the triumphs as they overcame abuse, illiteracy and loneliness

The story of these women's lives kept breaking my heart but as the story progressed , the continued perseverance, beauty and strength of their spirit and the power of hope as written by this author was a believable and moving experience.

beautiful story, painful but lovely

loved the performance, the Indian accents. Parvatis character is incredible. The end was not my favorite. Thirty is one of my favorite authors and this is by far her best work.

Literature at Its Finest

I could write a review about how utterly beautiful this story is, but that would be redundant since so many other reviewers have done that before me. I will, instead, talk about its virtues as a piece of literature. This book reveals so much about the changing culture of India, life in Mumbai, and, of course, the women who live there. This is not a sentimental book about the lives of women, but a realistic one that reveals the burdens so many women (perhaps of all cultures) carry in secrecy, My favorite line in the story is when Bhima ponders what would happen if women laid down their burdens and just refused to carry them any longer--no more guilt, no more shame, no more heartache. What an incredible concept!

My heart is soo full!

This was such a beautiful story from the first book to this one. I love when a story can be soo natural and real but yet have a quality that brings joy to your heart. These characters had such a hard life; various situations and struggles that forced them to step out of their comfort zones and the reward being love and acceptance. I felt so many emotions reading this book and it flowed seamlessly to where I didn’t want to stop listening and took every available moment to listen. I felt apart of the characters lives and at the end truly felt it was complete. Very well written!!

Such a Good Book

I chose this book randomly from a selection offered to me. After reading it, I was looking for another book similar to this one (about other cultures than my own) and saw that this book, The Secrets Between Us, was the sequel to the book I just read, The Space Between Us, by the same author. I ordered it immediately and loved this one as well. I re-read The Space Between Us because I wanted to remind myself how the story continued. I really enjoyed the performances in both books, that brought the characters to life. It is so interesting to me how other people live, how they think, and interact. Their personal histories, that bring them to their choices and decisions that forge their paths are fascinating. There are so many gifted writers. Thrity Umrigar is definitely one of the best. I highly recommend both books. I'll be reading more of her books!

Poignant and deeply-layered

Outstanding narrative voice. The interweaving of past and present lives, and the complexities of family, individual struggle and perseverence, are beautifully wrought.
