About this listen

Now a New York Times best seller!

From the author of Truths I Never Told You, Before I Let You Go, and the upcoming The Warsaw Orphan, Kelly Rimmer’s powerful WWII novel follows a woman’s urgent search for answers to a family mystery that uncovers truths about herself that she never expected.

"Kelly Rimmer has outdone herself. I thought that Before I Let You Go was one of the best novels I had ever read.... If you only have time to read one book this year The Things We Cannot Say should be that book. Keep tissues handy." (Fresh Fiction)

"Fans of The Nightingale and Lilac Girls will adore The Things We Cannot Say." (Pam Jenoff, New York Times best-selling author)

In 1942, Europe remains in the relentless grip of war. Just beyond the tents of the Russian refugee camp she calls home, a young woman speaks her wedding vows. It’s a decision that will alter her destiny...and it’s a lie that will remain buried until the next century.

Since she was nine years old, Alina Dziak knew she would marry her best friend, Tomasz. Now 15 and engaged, Alina is unconcerned by reports of Nazi soldiers at the Polish border, believing her neighbors that they pose no real threat, and dreams instead of the day Tomasz returns from college in Warsaw so they can be married. But little by little, injustice by brutal injustice, the Nazi occupation takes hold, and Alina’s tiny rural village, its families, are divided by fear and hate. Then, as the fabric of their lives is slowly picked apart, Tomasz disappears. Where Alina used to measure time between visits from her beloved, now, she measures the spaces between hope and despair, waiting for word from Tomasz and avoiding the attentions of the soldiers who patrol her parents’ farm. But for now, even deafening silence is preferable to grief.

Slipping between Nazi-occupied Poland and the frenetic pace of modern life, Kelly Rimmer creates an emotional and finely wrought narrative. The Things We Cannot Say is an unshakable reminder of the devastation when truth is silenced...and how it can take a lifetime to find our voice before we learn to trust it.

Don't miss Kelly Rimmer's new and unforgettable novel, The Warsaw Orphan.

Hard to believe people can treat other human beings the way that the Germans treated the Jewish people and many others. Good book. Sad, happy, loving, heartbreaking.

Cussing unnecessary

Story was good but the Alice narrator sounded like she was mad at the world in her very sharp/staccato voice even when she was being nice she sounded like a whining spoiled brat all the time....I was always relieved when it switched back to Aleena.

Sweet love story

This book definitely took me by surprise. It takes A LOT to get me choked up but I was so invested in the characters of this story that the ending really got me. Beautiful writing and beautiful performance.

Wow. Beautifully written!

I loved this book. The narrator did a wonderful job of all the characters. The story drew me in and I kept feeling like I wanted to see WhT would happen next. It gives a small glimpse of the broken hearts and broken world that some have endured, with hope on the other side for happiness.

One of the best stories I have read

I absolutely loved this book & narration. I finished it three days ago and am still thinking about it.
While I could never be able to understand what Alina’s family went through, the author does a tremendous job of connecting you to the characters. I’ll definitely pick this one up in paperback to read again.
This book should be made into a movie!

Heartbreaking

This book was amazing! The details and story line drew me in! It was very well written. The story line went back and forward from the present to the pass with a family. A must read if you like history.

Loved the surprises along the way. I know it’s a story, many events could have happened during the war and taught me much about the struggles, the endurance, and the reason why this book is titled “ the things we cannot say”. It is a book that will not make you laugh however it’s still worth listening to, it’s not a downer , it’s just reality of how people made it through difficult situations.

Great listen
