About this listen

Dina has the Shamer's Gift—one look into her eyes, and none can mask their guilt or hide their shame. Now even her brother, Davin, no longer dares to meet her glance. His conscience is troubled by his mother and sister's power, and he wants to avenge the crimes committed against his family with a battle by the sword.

I read the full series and wanted more. I loved the world mixed of fantasy and reality. I was in another world while I listened. The Performance was perfect. I wish there were more to the series.

Excellent book series.

The story was good and ended too soon. I didn’t care for the male narrator’s voice, but that’s just my opinion. It may have something to do with the fact I don’t like Davin. Regardless, it’s a good story and worth the listen. Onto the next.

Male narrator

it should be great responsibility, or wisdom or etc. Unfortunately they keep going places alone knowing they have a great enemy looking for them. Oh and don't get me started on their love of taking complete strangers on their word.. But their young and that's what yununs do. great story tho. I love it

With great power comes...

Really enjoyed the performance and story. So invested I would sit just 10 more minutes to listen.

Great!

The first book was better. Added male voice and perspective I didn't care for of the whining brother and his sad attempts at hyper masculinity. There are parts of the story that could be better developed but it's like the writer got bored of writing and then skipped from a day to like several days later without purpose. This was a little harder to listen to than the first book, but I hope the theme isn't girl goes off, gets captured, can escape but won't leave behind an innocent, people come rescue her and hope that the rest of the books lead up to something other than another capture and rescue.

Room for improvement

Both the writing and Zoe Mills' narration were excellent. I got the first book on a whim as it was included with my membership. I ended up binge-listening to the entire series! It's actually classified as a children's book, but I found it enticing and well written. Never felt like I was listening to a kids' book.

The whole series is wonderful

Good narration interesting magic system simple plot some times want to pop a character in the eye for odd choices or where it seemed things should work but don’t. Great story.

Shaker series

I almost stopped 3 more times than this book it was hard to get through and only touch the end which I was hoping for I'm glad it's over

Struggle

I found the premise of the first book interesting and decided to keep going with the series. Unfortunately, they added in second narrator ti read the male protagonist’s point of view. The narrator has an unusual inflection style that places emphasis on certain words, sometimes making it difficult to make sense of the sentence. The narrator also mispronounced his own character’s name! I don’t actually care how it is pronounced, as long as the narrator is consistent. The bad narration made it really hard to get into the story.

Male narrator is terrible

I hated almost every second second of reading this.
The first bit had me cringing my toes off, dying of second hand embarrassment for the boy.
The second bit had me actually sweating with rage at the bad guy.
All of it had me bothered by the (admittedly realistic) stupidity of all involved.
if the ending had been satisfying, it would've saved the whole thing & perhaps more, but as things stand it was just a lot of build up with no real pay off.
I can't, in good conscience, recommend this tripe.

very emotion-y
