About this listen

Nick Drake, a hero to believe in, is back! A contemporary western thriller.

It's 1969 and spring finally comes to the lonesome Oregon high desert after an especially bitter winter, but for every new beginning, something old must give way. Someone is poisoning wild horses and a vicious killer escapes from prison. A murder thrusts Vietnam veteran turned wildlife ranger Nick Drake into a desperate manhunt that turns into a fight for survival to protect those he holds dear. Spring quickly turns into a season of dying and life in Harney County will never be the same.

Listen to as a stand-alone or as part of the Nick Drake series.

Award-winning author Dwight Holing draws on his deep roots to the American West and understanding of the natural world to create a masterful story. With memorable characters and prose that crackles like the unforgiving setting, the suspense builds and drives The Shaming Eyes to a climax as powerful as a force of nature.

Excellent new series. Worth listening to.

as of Sept 2019, The Shaming Eyes is the last book in what I hope will be a series. I believe it will because an interesting new character was introduced.

The series takes place in Harney County, Oregon. One of the largest counties in the US and home of the ‘Let ‘er Buck’ Pendleton Rodeo.
Character development took place primarily in the first book, but more is told about each character in the second and third books.

It takes place during the middle of The Summer Of Love and Vietnam but in Harney county, hippies are not considered cool and cowboys are.

There is quite a bit of Native American lore and recovering addict blues in each book as the protagonist tries to free himself from his heroin habit picked up in ‘nam.

The protagonists love of the outdoors grows as he spends his time as a Fish and Wildlife officer, mixing with the colorful local Deputy Sheriff and the Deputy’s daughter.

He’s not Walt Longmire but he is a sad man trying to bootstrap himself up, much like Longmire.

Thoroughly enjoyable. I was sorry the 3 books were over and looking forward to more.

Very entertaining.

4/5 Book three of this series is very well done and wraps up the story from the previous novel. Fast paced, fun, and touching.

Riveting

This "Nick Drake" series keeps delivering. The main character (Nick) is a guy that tries to do the right thing as he feels he did not always do back in the Vietnam War or, as he calls, "in-country." Being a wildlife ranger, helping the local deputy sheriff, learning the Paiute Tribe language, and dealing with PTSD, Drake always seems busy. 1969 in Harney County, Oregon, continues to be an exciting setting for this third book in Dwight Holing's "Nick Drake" series. The many characters in this novel shine bright and come to life, making this a great book. Charles Leggett's narration is excellent.

Well worth the listen.

The stories in this series are well written and engaging. The twists and turns in the stories keep one guessing. The story lines seem to be historically accurate. The narrator does a great job with the cadence of Native American speech patterns. I have enjoyed the series so far and am looking forward to hearing more.

I love this genre. Sometimes the narrators aren’t so good but this one is excellent

Listened to the ending minutes multiple times.

Having gotten to know characters through previous adventures allowed the story to unfold quickly. Born into a military family and married to a Vietnam Veteran, the main character is meaningful and right on target. Charles Leggett did a magnificent job of narrating this story and Dwight Holing is one of my favorite authors.

New favorite series for me.

I am almost sad to write this review because I only have one book left to read in this series. I want to hurry up and get started, but I do not want it to end. Shaming Eyes is the best of the series so far!

i enjoyed this book

I don't like animals in my stories usually because humans are cruel and deadly to them. This story didn't drag out the saddness, so i was able to hear the entire book.

I will look for more from this author.

Just a great series

Not overly violent, full of beautiful imagery and deep understanding of nature, these books are quickly becoming lifelong favorites. The narration of “The Shaming Eyes” is perfect. I’m so happy I discovered this author and this series.
