About this listen

Filled with magic, heroism, and all-too-human characters, Bujold's Sharing Knife saga is both a gripping adventure and a poignant romance. In this third volume, Fawn, the young farm girl, and Dag, the seasoned soldier-sorcerer, set off to find fresh solutions to the perilous split between their peoples—and encounter new hazards both human and uncanny.

The farmers and riverfolk have long distrusted the power of the mysterious and aloof Lakewalkers, even though they depend on them for protection from the evil malices. The proud Lakewalkers, meanwhile, have exiled Dag after learning of his marriage to Fawn, the first outsider to be bound to a Lakewalker in their magical way. But as Dag's natural Lakewalker ability to manipulate "ground energy" begins to develop in dangerous directions, he and Fawn realize that big changes are ahead.

Critic reviews

"Nebula and Hugo winner Bujold explores culture clashes in this compelling third segment of the Sharing Knife series. Bujold excels at creating interesting and sympathetic characters, and this story will satisfy readers who enjoy romance as much as adventure." (Publishers Weekly)

Intriguing sequel

As someone who has read everything that the author has written, I was so happy that she seems to have come into her own again with this series. The books just make you happy!

This third one in the series gives you even more details on Dag's awakening talents and also a lot of action as they travel. Very enjoyable and highly recommended!

The Sharing Knife, Volume 3: Passage

Nice series and I found myself wanting more. The cover is not very appealing it looks like the guy is smoking something!

Technical difficulties

I'm enjoying this series and the world it's set in. The magic system is unique, and extremely well balanced. The disparate cultures are logical and feel like they arose organically. The wordiness and repetitive descriptions discussed by other reviewers did not catch my attention until the third listen. Even then they didn't detract from the story, but only felt like a storyteller's device.
However, there's a weird technical glitch at the start of every chapter of the 3rd book. If I'm listening to more than one chapter at a time, the recording skips the first 5 seconds of each chapter. I have to skip back to catch them. Usually no big deal but sometimes you miss nuances by missing those seconds, and if your hands are busy, you can't always spare one to rewind.

The saga continues! On the river!

In this sequel, we find Dag and Faun attracting new and unexpected members to their Bluefield tent, even as Dag discovers new abilities and uses for his 'ground sense.' It is a pivotal book in that the trip down river gives them time to discover their new life. There's plenty of action when they meet up with some heinous bandits. By the time I was done 'reading' this, I felt as if I'd been on the journey with them! Grab an oar and hang on!

My favorite in the series so far

The author adds some wonderful new characters to her story. It is very complex and thoughtful and breaks with the need to have everything come out perfectly tidy. This one also goes very scanty on the sex so that's a plus for me.
