About this listen

In December 1893, Sherlock Holmes-adoring Londoners eagerly opened their Strand magazines-- anticipating the detective's next adventure-- only to find the unthinkable: his creator, Arthur Conan Doyle, had killed their hero off. London spiraled into mourning -- crowds sported black armbands in grief -- and railed against Conan Doyle as his assassin.

Then in 1901, just as abruptly as Conan Doyle had "murdered" Holmes in "The Final Problem", he resurrected him. Though the writer kept detailed diaries of his days and work, Conan Doyle never explained this sudden change of heart. After his death, one of his journals from the interim period was discovered to be missing, and in the decades since, has never been found.

Or has it?

When literary researcher Harold White is inducted into the preeminent Sherlock Holmes enthusiast society, The Baker Street Irregulars, he never imagines he's about to be thrust onto the hunt for the holy grail of Holmes-ophiles: the missing diary. But when the world's leading Doylean scholar is found murdered in his hotel room, it is Harold - using wisdom and methods gleaned from countless detective stories - who takes up the search, both for the diary and for the killer.

Enjoyable and Entertaining

This will be a treat for "Sherlockians". If you listen long enough your favorite mystery writer, Holmesian expert or celebrity will be mentioned or be part of the plot. The narrator does a good job with the various voices required. Worth the time and money.

Masterful! I was completely enthralled.

Just as if I was reading a Holmes novel. Exceptionaly written and performed. Though I feel his character voices could use just a tad bit of work, the interweaving plots of the author and strong narrating ability of the reader helps them to not be too distracting. Truly, among the very best of historical fiction.

Good book & narration!

I enjoyed this book and think any fan Doyle’s work will enjoy this as well. James Langston does a really great job on the narration.

Great book...great narrator.

The was a very fun and engaging listen. Jumping back and forth between the two story lines meant that was never a dull moment.

I also enjoyed the narrator as much as the story. He really made the different characters come alive as he seamlessly switched been various accents.

The Game is Afoot..

I am a huge Sherlock Holmes fan and have read the cannon as well as spin offs of the 221B duo. Sadly though I don't know much about Doyle himself and pleasantly learned quite a lot about him. I was also highly engaged and entertained in the process. Audible 20 Review Sweepstakes Entry

The game is afoot with a new lineup

Premise is so cleverly executed (and fantastically narrated) the story is wrapped up before you fully realize the only interesting characters are Arthur Conan Doyle and Bram Stoker, who are essentially Holmes and Watson. Loved viewing Sherlock through viewpoint of his creator and imagining his friendship with Bram Stoker consisting of intrigue & action like is presented here. Thoroughly enjoyed it, (even though Benedict Cumberbatch, Martin Freeman, and Mark Gatiss have forever spoiled me; their’s will always be *my* Sherlock ;) )

Great historical fiction

I have always been a fan of detective mysteries in general and Sherlock Holmes n particular. Mr Moore combined a modern mystery in the form of the missing diary of Arthur Conan Doyle with the early 20th happenings of Doyle and his own Watson, Bram Stoker. I enjoyed it in both time periods and the mysteries of both as well.
