About this listen

Sergeant Bill Bee’s brush with death was broadcast on TV screens and published in newspapers around the world, but behind the cloud of dirt caused by a Taliban sniper bullet is a story of heroism, tragedy, and fighting an invisible war.

Sergeant Bill Bee is the Marine in one of the defining images from the War on Terror. He responded to gunfire without protective gear when a Taliban sniper shot hit a sandbank just a few inches from his head in Garmsir, Helmand Province.

When his world plunged into darkness, he thought his luck had run out. But he somehow survived, and his brush with death on May 18, 2008, was captured by a Reuters photographer. The images were broadcast around the world and became an iconic display of bravery at a time when support for the war in Afghanistan was low. People remember the reckless Marine who risked his life, but the story of the man reeling behind that cloud of dusk is one of an invisible war he is still fighting to this day.

Billie Bee explains the story of a true American hero. This book provides countless emotions as Billie Bee and Wills Robinson detail all the ups and downs with being a soldier. Even in the challenging times, Billie never seems to lose his pride in being a US Marine. This book has been hair raising, angering, and sad at times, but also exciting, heart warming, and comedic. It is so well written.

I am on chapter 6 of the audible version, Michael Braun is reading. I listen to a lot of audible books and I have to say he must have been handpicked for this book. He is engaging and interesting, really the perfect fit in my opinion.

A great book! Every American should read it!

Thank you to the author, with you sharing your experiences and truly opening up I hope other marines and servicemen realize it is ok to do so. It is ok to ask for help.

Thank you

My husband and I went through FMTB at the same time, and although I wasn’t in his platform I’ll never forget his crazy antics! SSgt led a squad from my husband’s platoon through the swamp in the middle of the night in a scout swimmer raid of the beach my platoon had our tents set up. Their squad came out of the water with paint all over their faces, and the biggest grins knowing they “got” us! I just remember standing their in shock as SSgt B led them through our tents laughing knowing they got us! We learned so much from him and continue as Corpsmen, telling stories about his chaos! This book was epic and I definitely recommend it to any Devil Dog or Devil Doc out there!

SSgt B was one of THE BEST FMTB instructors!
