About this listen

From the youngest living recipient of the Medal of Honor, an extraordinary inspirational memoir that will change the life of every listener.

“Kyle displayed a heroism in the blink of an eye that will inspire for generations." (President Barack Obama, at Kyle Carpenter's Medal of Honor ceremony)

"I want my story to help others see what’s extraordinary in themselves." (Kyle Carpenter)

On November 21, 2010, US Marine Lance Corporal Kyle Carpenter was posted on a rooftop in Helmand Province, Afghanistan, when an enemy grenade skittered across the roof. Kyle’s post that afternoon, with his friend and fellow Marine Nick Eufrazio, had been eerily quiet; now, with no time to escape, they had to make a split-second decision or they would both be dead. Without a second thought, Kyle jumped on the grenade, a brutal killing device. His vision went blank, his entire body numb, he tried to move but could not. His gear had melted. It felt as though someone was pouring warm water all over him; he dazedly realized that the liquid was his own blood. He had made an instantaneous decision, almost on instinct, one that would change his life forever.

Kyle’s heroic act saved Nick Eufrazio's life, but nearly cost Kyle his own. His heart flatlined three times. Wounded from head to toe, Kyle lost his right eye, as well as most of his face from the nose down. It would take dozens of surgeries and almost three years in and out of the hospital to reconstruct his body - and from there, he began the process of rebuilding his life. What he has accomplished in the last five years is truly extraordinary: He’s undergone extensive physical rehabilitation, graduated from college, ran three marathons, and embarked on a new career as a motivational speaker. And in 2014, he was awarded our nation’s highest military decoration, Medal of Honor, by President Barack Obama, making Carpenter the youngest living recipient of the award.

“With that singular act of courage, Kyle, you not only saved your brother in arms, you displayed a heroism in the blink of an eye that will inspire for generations”, stated the president.

You Are Worth It is a memoir about the War in Afghanistan and Kyle’s heroics, yes, but it also is a manual for living. Organized around the credos that have guided Kyle’s life (from “Don’t Hide Your Scars” to “Call Your Mom”), the book encourages us to become our best selves in the time we've been given on earth. Above all, it’s about finding purpose in life, despite the significant challenges that may come your way. As Kyle writes, addressing us all: “You are worth it. You are. You are worth protecting, you are worth fighting for, you are worth time in a hospital bed and deep scars on my body...."

Moving and unforgettable, You Are Worth It is an astonishing memoir from one of our most extraordinary young leaders.

Motivating and inspiring

I’ve listened to this book twice. The first time while deployed for a little Marine Corps motivation and the second time post deployment during my recovery from surgery. This book has helped me stay positive and gain motivation to succeed in my career and in life.

A truly humbling tale of a true American hero

An absolutely incredible story of bravery, selflessness, and true humility. Kyle (in his own words and voice) walks the reader through his inner thoughts and reveals himself to be the selfless and devoted warrior that all modern servicemen and women (and people in general) should aspire to be. He is purposeful in his life, and detailed in his reflections, and there is not a single person on earth that could not learn something from his story and his thoughts on it.

Awesome!

I originally heard about this book through a podcast for the radio show Big D and Bubba! Only knowing briefly what it was about. I was blown away by how I could not stop listening to this book. This was the first audible book that I was desperately waiting to the next time I could take the time to listen to it. Kyles voice was so calming during the read as well. Felt like I was sitting by a campfire listening to him tell me his story. Fantastic!

Semper Fidelis

Stay Motivated.

An amazing, motivational, inspirational life! I knew the story of his Medal of Honor but I didn’t know the story of Kyle Carpenter beyond his actions in Marjah. Kyle you are an inspiration and have re-motivated me. I have forgot the feeling of what being a Marine really felt like over the years. I’m sure you have helped so many of our brother by telling your story. Thank you, and Semper Fi Brother.

Absolutely Beautiful

An amazing book that demonstrates life values, optimism at it’s finest, and positivity in a life where there is so much room for nihilism and negativity. This is my first and will more than likely be my only book review on Audible. Such a wonderful read.

A Story of Perseverance and Intense Reflection

Not only as a Marine and a resident of South Carolina does this story resonate with me intensely, it’s also because of the battles I have fought in my own life.

This story is for everyone. You do not have to be a service member, or a person who has felt with a near death experience. This story is for anyone who has been fighting thier entire life and has never really had the chance to reflect. I found myself reflecting on parts of my life that I never could of imagined. Read this book if you need motivation, acceptance and relation to someone who was just living thier life and realized they were not alone. Best read of my life by far. It also means so much that Kyle narrated it himself. You truly see the story through his eyes.

Inspirers

Kyle, we as a family listen to your book for the 7 hour drive from Omaha Ne, to Denver Co to drop our son off at MEPs to swear in as a US Army Infantry recruit. Although your story was scary and incredible as a mom I appreciate your desire to serve and protect. I also have a higher appreciation for our military and all the components in which to save and sacrifice for each other. Thank you for you service and sacrifice and your parents ability to let go I needed to hear it.

Out freaking standing book!!

Absolutely great book & Narrated great. Some parts are difficult to hear since it can be graphic due to wounds sustained by those Marines overseas from IEDs & grenades. Having been there in there boots as well I know first hand. Highly recommend this book!!
