About this listen

Michael Corleone is returning to the U.S. after the two-year exile to Sicily in which listeners left him in The Godfather. But he is ordered to bring with him the young Sicilian bandit, Salvatore Guiliano, who is the unofficial ruler of northwestern Sicily. In his fight "to make Sicilians free people", the young folk hero, based on the real-life Giuliano of the 1940s, has made both the police and the Mafia his enemies. So when Don Croce Malo, chief of the Sicilian Mafia, and the policemen who has been tracking Guiliano each offer to help Corleone find the elusive Robin Hood, betrayal seems inevitable.

Mario Puzo has created a sequel to The Godfather that is every bit as compelling and dramatic. But The Sicilian is a distinct literary achievement in its historical inspiration and its vivid portrait of Sicilian peasant life.©2001 Mario Puzo (P)2009 Brilliance Audio, Inc.

I am glad I made it through the entire book, but it was in doubt multiple times. From the robotic main narrator to the Don sucking wind after every other word, the absolute worst was the actor who voiced Michael. Rather than a reserved thoughtful cunning character, he sounded like a street kid from Boston. Almost requested a refund a few times but liked the story a lot. I would recommend the book but NOT this audiobook.

Excellent story, horrendous recording

I'm a huge fan of the Godfather. I was disappointed with this story. I thought it was anticlimactic.

Just the facts ma'am. Rapid monotone with little emotion or inflection. The cast was better, but didn't overcome the narration

Read like SGT Joe Friday from Dragnet

As someone else noted, slow down the speed to 0.8 and it will be quite enjoyable. I didn't read up much about this book before downloading but it's not really a sequel, it's another story in the Corleone universe. Nevertheless it was well worth a credit.

Slow it down to 0.8 speed.

well done narration, cast was fantastic. I was initially concerned about some of the reviews stating it was read too quickly and that the ensemble cast was hard to keep track of. I would agree that the first few chapters are read extremely fast, but it significantly improves after that. also the cast is not at all difficult to follow, and gives a lively performance with great Italian accents - very well done!

very well done

Would you consider the audio edition of The Sicilian to be better than the print version?

No

What didn’t you like about Larry Brandenburg, Jane Brody, Walter Brody, Charl’s performance?

The narrator has a great voice, but he read too quickly and without enough inflection. It felt as if he was just trying to get through the story as fast as he could. The overall effect of having a cast was to make the narration cheesy. The narration came off like a bad radio production.

Great story, but the narration ...

This audio book must have been produced on a tight budget. Whoever spliced the sound files together must have been trying to make the book shorter, since voices are almost on top of one another. The whole book is recited at about 110%-115% of normal reading speed, maybe faster. This book should be re-recorded.

Great story, lousy performance

It was ok. It made me doubt whether the rest of the Godfather series was worth my time.

Ok
