About this listen

From Nicholas Pileggi, author of the best-selling Wiseguy -- the #1 best seller that later became the hit movie Goodfellas -- comes this brilliantly told tale of love, marriage, adultery, murder and revenge Mafia-style, the true story of how the mob finally lost its stranglehold over the multi-billion-dollar casino gambling industry of Las Vegas.

No one knew more about casinos than Frank "Lefty" Rosenthal, the gambling mastermind who, with his best friend and partner Anthony Spilotro virtually ran Las Vegas for the mob. For years it was the perfect arrangement -- Lefty provided the smarts and obsessive attention to detail, while Tony made sure the bosses stayed happy with their weekly suitcases filled with millions of dollars in skimmed cash. It was so sweet it should have lasted forever, but Lefty's obsession with running the town -- and Tony's obsession with Lefty's beautiful showgirl wife Geri -- eventually led to the betrayals and investigations that exploded into one of the greatest debacles in the mob's history.

A real-life story of love and betrayal set in America's favorite playground, Casino is a Mafia tragedy of Shakespearean dimensions, as well as the inside account of just how the mob lost control of the neon money-making machine it created.

Amazing

It was a little difficult as they changed the names in the Movie, but the story is real and accurate. I enjoyed the changing of narrators as it made it easier to keep up.

Great Book

This is a great book that goes into more detail than the movie Casino does. It also corrects a few mistakes the movie has at the end, and gives another view on who might have bombed the car Lefty. It was the first audio book I listened to in full. It was great.

Amazing!!

I love this book so much. It’s very interesting hearing the real story and little details that didn’t make the movie. It helps you really understand the movie a lot better.

While this is an overall good production, it is too abridged.

I would have enjoyed more of this story in the abridged format. I hope that may happen at some point in time.

Too short

Would have loved the unabridged version! Also, the really loud jazz riffs in between the chapters was a tad obnoxious (volume would be at low listening level then out of nowhere blast the music loudly!)
Love the story, but I feel a bit robbed that it was too short!

It’s the movie in spoken words

Casino is one of my favorite movies!!! It’s kind of nice to already have characters in your head to match to the characters.

Where can I find the unabridged version? Loved it.

Pileggi is a master storyteller. This is based on real events but the twists and turns are entertaining. When a book keeps me from falling asleep at night while I listen, it's a winner. I had to shut it off so I could look forward to the next chapter.
The narrators (who are actors) were so good. Despite my five stars across the board, I do have two suggestions: 1) it became a challenge to know when the characters were changing and it was difficult to keep up with who was who. 2) The abridged version is simply to short.

Help for a student

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would recommend this audio book only if you are not reading along with book. I find it easier to listen and read along for books that I have to read for class. Unfortunately, the book and the audio book don't match up. They have all the same context but it doesn't all match up when you read along. I would have to jump around and find what part they were reading next. The audio book has 4 chapters while the book has 24 chapters so that made things confusing as well. I still enjoyed listening to the book but I wish I had know before I bought the audio that it wouldn't match up.
