About this listen

1236. Beautiful Ailenor of Provence, cultured and intelligent, is only 13 when she marries Henry III. Aware of the desperate importance of providing heirs to secure the throne from those who would snatch it away, she is ruthless in her dealings with Henry's barons.

As conflict escalates between them, Ailenor's shrewd and clever Savoyard uncles come to support her, but her growing political power is threatened when Henry's half-siblings also arrive at court. Henry and Ailenor become embroiled in an unpopular war to protect Gascony, the last English territory on the continent, sparking conflict with warrior knight Simon de Montfort, the King's seneschal.

Ailenor, desperate to protect Gascony for her son, strives to treat with France and bring peace to Gascony. Caught in a web of treachery and deceit, 'she-wolf' Ailenor's courage is tested to the limit. Can she find the strength to control her destiny and protect her all that she holds dear?

The story is probably better than it sounded. It was hard to pay attention and enjoy the story due to plodding and awkward narration. When the narrator was simply reading, it sounded fine. However, when she tried to read the dialogues, it was awful. It makes you want to stop listening. It does not get better the farther into the book she gets, unfortunately. I hate to leave bad reviews, but buyers should be informed. Maybe just get an ebook and read it yourself.

Story is good, narration is not

The accents seemed off and forced and the story line kind of bland. I would have hoped for more character development and description and intrigue.

Not my favorite

I’m not sure if the content of this book would have been made any better by a change in narrator, but it certainly could not have been worse. The narration was beyond awful. I’ve listened to 500+ audiobooks so far, and this was definitely one of the most inferior performances I’ve had the misfortune of encountering.

In a word, disappointing.

narrator TOO monotone. I could not endure it any more. it distracted from the story. I'd like a refund.

beyond bored

I want to return this because the narrator is so boring, and I can’t get past the first chapter, but audible won’t let me. I had no idea you could not return two books in a row. Beware of your future purchases!
