About this listen

Damien and Millie take on their most dangerous assignment yet.

After a string of arson fires drives migrant farm workers from their homes and threatens Millie’s daughter-in-law, Damien agrees to go undercover to infiltrate the white-supremacist, neo-Nazi militia responsible for the fires and unmask the identity of their leader.

Millie covers his absence by spreading the news that they have separated, while he travels back to Atlantic City. When Damien reappears in California, it’s in the guise of a former cop with neo-Nazi sympathies.

Left alone to run their detective agency while maintaining a brave front, Millie dives into an investigation of a friend of the new mayor of Carmel-by-the Sea, a local resident she suspects of being a Nazi war criminal in hiding.

The action is non-stop as Damien and Millie risk their lives to eradicate the spectre of violence and racism from their community.

Another enjoyable tale

Damien and Millie Dickens are back for another adventure! Damien infiltrates a gang of Neo-Nazis who are trying to run non-white people out of the country by harrassment, intimidating and criminal activities such as fire-bombing business. Damien is asked by the police to go undercover to get evidence of who these people are and how to stop them. It becomes very personal when the targets are friends of theirs.

Meanwhile, Millie is working on her own investigation of one of the fine upstanding citizens of the community after a friend of hers and her mother - a survivor of the Holocaust - come to visit her. The mother recognizes this citizen as a Nazi who oversaw the concentration camp she was interred in during the war, and asks Millie to prove that he is this person and bring him up on charges.

I quite enjoyed the story, although there were one of two things I'll mention here - one technical, the other personal preference. The technical part: the narrator, who is great, doesn't leave enough space between the changes in POV to indicate that there is a change of POV from Damien to Millie and that is a bit jarring when you expect the narration to continue in one character and find that it's been switched.

The personal preference: I like the plot line, but I thought it would have been more interesting if the reader didn't learn about Damien's and Millie's plan right from the start, but were left to figure it out, or not, along with the characters in the book. Having said that, it didn't take anything away from the story having it written the way it was.

Great job, again.

If you like PI stories with action and suspense…

Non-stop action and suspense in Phyllis Entis’s latest, THE SILVER STAR CAPER. When PI Damien Dickens infiltrates a Neo-Nazi group, he finds himself and his family in incredible danger. His wife and business partner Miillie gets to show how courageous and resourceful she can be. The story is set in the 80s, but could easily have been set in the present day.

Another great mystery!

I first read the text version of the Silver Star Caper, but I always enjoy going back and listening to the audio version which helps bring it to life even more. I love every installment of the Damien Dickens Mysteries, but this is definitely my favorite plot! I hope to hear more!!

AWESOME PI MYSTERY

This book is non-stop action! The multiple storylines overlap seamlessly and the characters and well developed and clearly defined. Though It is clearly part of a series, listening to this book first, I am not left with the feeling of missing any important details. I am however excited to seek out the great of the series.
The writing was excellent and the narrator top notch. This made the multiple store lines and broad range of characters easy to distinguish, not always and easy task in an audio book and this style. Well done!

Best part? The end of the story was not rushed. Everything was tied up nicely at the same pace as the story, not that one-page race that so many of today's stories seem to have shifted too! That made This reader extra satisfied!!

The best Damien Dickens Mystery yet!

With each caper in the Damien Dickens series of mysteries, the mysteries become more complex, and the experiences of Damien and Millie Dickens become more enthralling.

In the Silver Star Caper, Damien tempts death to infiltrate a violent neo-Nazi group. Millie must endure their separation by pretending — to even her closest friends and relatives— that her marriage has failed and she knows nothing of her husband since his departure. Meanwhile, she faces mystery and danger, as well.

The audiobook brings out details and tensions differently than does the print version, just because of the inherent differences in the oral vs. written art forms. That is why I enjoyed and appreciated the audiobook even though I had already read the novel silently.

The narrator, Tom Lennon, is adept at reading the mystery with an appropriate level of emotion or detachment, whichever is called for at any point in the text. However, the text itself is so well constructed by author Phyllis Entis that in this instance the material is far superior to the performance.

I recommend The Silver Star Caper audiobook whether or not you have read the print or ebook version. You’ll discover a whole new level of this great story to enjoy.

Love these Dicken stories

This series gets stronger with each book. I suppose that's because the characters grow stronger with each mystery they solve. Dick and Millie's relationship hits a rocky edge, or at least that's what appears is happening, but with Dick's life is in jeopardy, Millie won't let down her man. As usual, Tom Lennon gives a strong and consistent voice to Dick's character. I love these cozy mysteries.

Less Cozy, More Thriller - but still Great

This is by far the most serious topic that has faced Damien and Millie. I won't give any spoilers, but this will keep you up all night to finish. Looking forward to the next.
