About this listen

Explore the Captivating History of the Six Wives of Henry VIII

Henry VIII, King of England and Ireland in the first half of the 16th century, is one of history’s most famous monarchs for many reasons. He ruled ruthlessly, was quick to cry “treason!” and execute, and equally quick to fall in and out of love. Henry changed the religious fabric of England forever and left his mark on the wider world - but what of the six women he took as his queens?

From the regal and capable Catherine of Aragon to the patient and generous Katherine Parr, Henry’s wives represented a range of personalities, goals, beliefs, and influences on the king. Each of Henry’s six wives represented a facet of the king himself, whether he liked to admit it or not; unfortunately, a Queen of England at the side of Henry VIII could never be sure of her husband’s love - or her safety. These are the stories of three Catherines, two Annes, and one Jane.

Great Tudor overview

Excellent read; lots of nuggets missed in documentaries I’ve seen; and good to be able to contrast and compare.

Super Smart

This wonderful easy read gives a good long sketch of each of Henry's wives, with increasingly less detail as time goes on. As with most book on Poor Henry VIII, the women get center stage, ignoring, but not totally, the extraordinary events of the Tudor ruler.

So Nice

The inter played politics and religion as well as the king's quirkiness are enlightening. I reveled in the richness of presentation, and would enjoy listening to this book in the future again.

Great Compliment

The story was presented chronologically, with a few, well integrated digressions to give us the history of each of Henry's wives. Chapters were short and the introduction of new characters was kept to a minimum, creating a very lucid narrative. New characters were always given context, both in the writing and by some great family trees, and we were often reminded who recurring characters were.

Kept Me Involve

The book focuses less on the personalities of the six wives and more on the politics of the Tudor court. I found the detailed discussion of Wolsey's fall very interesting.

Very Well-Written

Well written, well researched, well filled with period culture - this is an outstanding book! The writing is as good as a novel, though scrupulously backed by numerous endnotes.

Going to see "Six"? - Listen to this book!

I just saw "Six" and it helped to have read about the wives of Henry the VIII.

The musical is very good and fast paced. This brief history helped me to understand references made in the performance.

Very informative

It was a good overview of all of the wives, and backstop on the kids.
