About this listen

Explore the captivating history of the Tudors!

Five Tudor monarchs sat on the throne of England and Ireland from 1485 to 1603. The family earned their royal rights through strategic planning and battlefield prowess, and kept them because of intellect, strength, and sheer determination. The Tudors, one of England’s most powerful and famous royal dynasties, knitted together a fragmented and small island nation that became one of the world’s financial, colonial, and technological superpowers.

There is so much more to the story of these kings and queens than beheadings, political marriages, and the reformation of the church - but those events remain some of the family’s most enthralling moments.

This captivating history audiobook covers topics such as:

  • The Tudors of Wales
  • The Wars of the Roses
  • Catherine of Valois, Mother of the Tudor Dynasty
  • Margaret Beaufort, Second Tudor Matriarch
  • King Henry VII
  • Arthur Tudor
  • King Henry VIII
  • Margaret Tudor, Sister of Henry VIII
  • Mary Tudor, Queen of France
  • The Birth of the Church of England
  • King Henry VIII: Wives Two and Three
  • King Henry VIII: The Last Three Wives
  • King Edward VI
  • The Nine Days’ Queen, Jane Grey
  • Elizabeth Tudor
  • Mary Stuart, Queen of Scots
  • And much more

So listen to this audiobook if you want to learn more about the Tudors!

The coverage of the queen, Elizabeth I, is scanty -- perhaps her personal actions were few, or resources are not available. Altogether, this is a book that belongs in the library of any English history aficionado.

I thought it was a very good book, went into great detail and back story into the lives of the Tudors.

Got the book to brush up on my history, and hopefully try to get interested in the Tudors. I love British history and am somewhat of a nut on the subject. Alas, though the book was well-written, and the author's research seemed to be excellent, I still don't like the Tudors, and frankly, just could not finish the book.

A good read, with qualifications.

Well written and engaging, but rather weird in that it is a comprehensive history written by a historian who doesn't much care for his subjects. I can't fathom spending the immense amount of time it takes to research and write a book like this when you actively dislike the protagonists!

Different take on the Tudors

Henry VII smeared those he usurped the throne from to justify his actions and, while his son Henry VIII tried hard to fill the shoes of his grandfather Edward IV, he just didn't have the right stuff. To be fair, though Elizabeth has her good points, she, Mary and Edward strike me as emotionally stunted, no doubt the result of their upbringing, and that was a big reason that, despite this book, I still am not a big fan.

It is quite readable and informative.

I've read a number of books on this era and this was generally easy to read and both clarified some things and added knowledge I was previously unaware of. He occasionally stops and goes back or magnifies a subject to clarify some aspect of the narrative which is very helpful.

An easy read and great audible of the era

I actually found the author's willingness to look at both sides fairly and see that the Pope and English Catholics weren't entirely evil, nor the English reformers entirely good, refreshing. Look at both sides and find the truth somewhere between them, as the saying goes. The author takes the Tudors and the friends and enemies to task and has produced an interesting, and very readable survey of this most notorious English dynasty.

Definitely a different look at The Tudors.

All you readers out there with a love for Tudor English history, you will find this book one to keep for your personal library. I enjoyed learning more in depth about the politics, religious wars and personal info on key characters in history. Let me tell you, I was really seeing Henry VII all through very rosy glasses! I thought I had a good handle on what I knew about these people; oh how wrong I AM. From an ordinary person's perspective, I was better educated after reading this book. Things about the period that I never knew made the era more understandable. Thank you, Captivating History!

A famous period of English history.

Really I learned a lot about the politics of the era and the British/Protestant dislike of Catholics makes more sense to me now, as does the complicated English-Spanish relationships.

A special history book.
