About this listen

The Tantalus Cluster is the fragile cradle of humanity.

The Sojourn is a melange of rich storytelling, superb sound effects, and well-written characters that sound so real it's like you're in the shuttle beside them. There's a lot to enjoy in this immersive, fun audiodrama." (Jeremy Szal)

“It's my first audiodrama and it sets the bar very high! Really high quality sound effects and talented voice actors bring the story to life like nothing else.” (Matterbeam, ToughSF)

Adrift in the divide between galaxies and surrounded by the vast emptiness of the intergalactic void, the Tantalus Cluster is the only home humanity has ever known. Desperate and facing starvation, humanity’s only hope is a strange nebula that has suddenly appeared beyond the edge of the cluster. Its shifting clouds may hide a source of salvation for the people of Tantalus, but time is running out.

Signing on to the ambitious Avalon Expedition, Privateer Captain Cassandra Farren will face the shadows of both the past and future as she leads her small crew into the unknown in a last, desperate bid for the survival of the human race.

Directed and produced with careful scientific consultation, The Sojourn captures every detail of life aboard ship and features a full cast of veteran voice actors, backed up by high-quality sound effects and an epic original soundtrack.

Starring Larissa Thompson as Captain Cassandra Farren, Emily Serdahl as Director Elizabeth Ancelet, Laura Faye Smith as Tamara Melari, Ben Prendergast as Mathias Croft, Stephen Trafford as Inquisitor Castian Vadric, also featuring Matthew Kaufman as Lieutenant Jasper Ravi, and Lelia Symington as Empress Valendra the Sixth. Written by Daniel Orrett, Rowan J. Coleman, and Larissa Thompson with sound design by Kennedy Phillips and music by Sam Redfern.

I can say with confidence that this is currently (Oct. 29, 2023) the best experience you will find in any audiobook. To make it clear, this is more like a movie without visuals. It has sound effects, different people playing different characters, and added music, leading to far more enjoyment.

The voice acting is second to none. It was already outstanding in the first three chapters (which were the only ones released on Audible for a long time). One day, I see the whole first season had now been released, so I had higher expectations than I’ve had for anything ever, and Chapter Four immediately blew those expectations out of the water with a torpedo. It is the pinnacle voice-work, based on a simply incredible story.

As to not write a full essay on, I’ll say this: Get it as soon as you have the opportunity. And while your at it, considering supporting them on Patreon. I don’t use Patreon, but I’m considering it just because of this.

I pretty sure I'll run out of words before I adequately explain how much I love this series, but I'll try to keep it brief. It's got an excellent story, awesome worldbuilding, amazing characters who are brought to life by a fantastic cast of VAs, all backed by gorgeous music.
The Sojourn's official YouTube channel (as well as Spacedock) have extended lore and ship breakdowns, as well as some shorts and excerpts. I also highly recommend those.
No, seriously. Listen to The Sojourn. I promise you won't regret the time or credity/money you spend on it.

I can't recommend this enough!

A Must Listen

I was originally uncertain how I liked the no narrator style of the sojourn, but it did grow on me each chapter. voice work was excellent, though some of the female cast had 'similiar' voice pitch to the point that it took me a bit to 100% know who was talking.
The 'age of sail' theme to the crew / language was an interesting twist that separated sojourn a lot from similar space opera/military scifi.
I enjoyed the story from scene to scene - each set peice was interesting. I however thought the 'larger' story arch wasn't as good as it could be. *spoilers - the starvation theme felt like it needed to be better flushed out. how did this happen to a multiplanet/system community? saying 'war' was the reason, didn't seem good enough. maybe I missed it. I felt like there was a theme of 'anti-religion' baked into the story - which came off abit strong for my tastes...
will I get season 2? I think so. the characters I enjoyed. I was expecting abit more science or explanation to the space battles, but without a narrator, it felt a bit light on it.
production quality was great throughout - sound in particular.
for season 2, can we get the Gwen be a bit more privateer please.

Enjoyable with quirks

I'm just going to say this is as good if not better than the Expanse in my opinion. The voice acting is top tier and several moments brought me right back to my time as a sailor in the Pacific. the 1MC sounds and calls are amazing and gave me a flashback or two. Story and character development is a master class and now my bar for comparing sci-fi IPs.

Perfect

Best example of an audio drama I’ve listened too. Sounds effects do not get in the way of the voicing. However, this format suffers from a critical issue which is, without a narrator describing things you don’t get to “see” anything. I’d really like to hear a narrator set scenes and provide descriptions, then the full voice cast can follow-up. Worth the credit, but not a traditional audio book.

Excellent effects and audio mixing

An amazing story full of fun and emotion. Even these words cannot describe my feelings towards this audio drama. I only wish I can write strays just as good in the future

Fucking Amazing

Great voice acting audio and story one of the best I’ve ever heard

You can’t just end it with my favorite song artist that’s cheating

Damn good space opera/sci-fi

It's a great story, and the actors bring it to life. It was no time getting dark and exciting. Lay down the foundation for a new story. I can not wait for Season Two.

Great Story loved it

This was an excellent listen and had so much to offer in varying plot elements. I enjoyed the authenticity of the characters. It felt like the depth of Star Trek met the adventure of The Expanse.

Great storytelling.
