Melanie Chisholm
About this listen
An intimate memoir from international pop star Melanie Chisholm—better known as Mel C. or Sporty Spice—chronicling her trajectory from small-town girl to overnight icon as part of the Spice Girls.
25 years ago, The Spice Girls, a girl band that began after five women answered an ad in the paper, released their first single. 'Wannabe' became a hit and from that moment and, almost overnight, Melanie Chisholm went from small town girl to Sporty Spice, part of one of the biggest music groups in history.
Beginning in her bedroom in the north-west of England dreaming of performing on stage, THE SPORTY ONE follows the meteoric rise of the Melanie and The Spice Girls, from the incredible highs of becoming one of the world’s most recognizable popstars–playing at Wembley, conquering the BRITs, closing the Olympics–to the difficult lows. For the first time ever, Melanie talks about the pressures of fame, the shaming and bullying she experienced, the struggles she has had with her body image and mental health, and the difficulty of finding yourself when the whole world knows your name.
THE SPORTY ONE is an incredible story of resilience, hope and how you can find your power.

Jennette McCurdy was six years old when she had her first acting audition. Her mother’s dream was for her only daughter to become a star, and Jennette would do anything to make her mother happy. So she went along with what Mom called “calorie restriction." She endured extensive at-home makeovers while Mom chided, “Your eyelashes are invisible, okay? You think Dakota Fanning doesn’t tint hers?” She was even showered by Mom until age sixteen while sharing her diaries, email, and all her income. In I’m Glad My Mom Died, Jennette recounts all this in unflinching detail.

In this honest, layered and unforgettable book that alternates between storytelling and her own poetry, Pamela Anderson breaks the mold of the celebrity memoir while taking back the tale that has been crafted about her. Her blond bombshell image was ubiquitous in the 1990s. Discovered in the stands of a football game, she was immediately rocket launched into fame, becoming Playboy’s favorite cover girl and an emblem of Hollywood glamour and sexuality. But what happens when you lose grip on your own life—and the image the notoriety machine creates for you is not who you really are?

Growing up in the friendly suburbs of Richmond, Virginia, Constance Wu was often scolded for having big feelings or strong reactions. “Good girls don’t make scenes,” people warned her. And while she spent most of her childhood suppressing her bold, emotional nature, she found an early outlet in local community theater—it was the one place where big feelings were okay—were good, even. Acting became her refuge, her touchstone, and eventually her vocation.

Story
It took me a lifetime to have the courage and the clarity to write my memoir. I want to tell the story of the moments - the ups and downs, the triumphs and traumas, the debacles and the dreams - that contributed to the person I am today. This book is composed of my memories, my mishaps, my struggles, my survival, and my songs. Unfiltered. I went deep into my childhood and gave the scared little girl inside of me a big voice. I let the abandoned and ambitious adolescent have her say, and the betrayed and triumphant woman I became tell her side.

Fantastic!
Absolute loved her book, and that she read it herself. It gives a complete insight into the phenomenon that was the spice girls, and into Mel C’s life. It also clears up all the misunderstandings and unanswered questions! Brilliant!!

My favorite Spice Girl autobiography
I've read all the other Spice girls autobiographies, but this one takes the cake because she is completely honest and I've always wanted her to write a book about her life. Not to mention I'm a bit biased because she's my favorite Spice Girl and one of my fave solo artists of all time. Her narration is hilarious. I love her accents, and the way she tries to mimic people. She should definitely go into voice acting. I've found myself laughing out loud many times while I read. I teared up at times too, especially during chapter 14 as I've experienced mental health issues as well. So glad she's in a happier place now. Her life is truly inspirational, as is her music which has helped me out of many low points in my life. This book is fun, hilarious, entertaining but also helpful and full of wisdom that only age and hardship can provide. The best Spice Girl of the lot. I also love how with each decade that passes in her book she reminds us of the pop culture moments of each era.

This memoir will spice up your life!
I love the fact that this audio version is narrated by Melanie C herself. Such an amazing journey! I learned so much about Melanie and the Spice Girls. It kept my interest and attention the whole way through. The happy bits made me laugh… the not so happy bits made me really sad and lonely with her... She is such an inspiration and I don’t think her story could have came at a better time for me. I am so grateful to Melanie for sharing her talents and for having the strength and courage to share her story with us all.

Amazing and inspirational
I loved listening to Melanie read her own story, her voice is distinctive and soothing. Her story is amazing, there were some parts that were hard to listen and almost made me want to cry and punch people. She is a humble warrior and a amazing singer.

Excellent
I had liked the spice girls as a kid but for many years they'd kind of faded into the background for me. One day when I was waiting for my friend to get up I decided to kill some time by watching some old Spice Girls videos... and was blown away that I'd never noticed the sheer talent that Melanie C had. After that I listened through all of her solo stuff and really fell in love with her as an artist. I could tell through a lot of songs that she had a lot of important stuff to say, and I'm so glad that she's written a memoir to fill a lot of those gaps. Her story is excellent, relatable, inspiring, and cautionary. It's really worth reading, for anyone, but especially if you're already a Mel C/Spice Girls fan. And the fact that her narration is so good only makes it even better.

Thank You Melanie!
I've been a Spice Girls fan since 1997. The lovely young women helped shape my confidence as a young girl who was becoming a woman. I've never stopped being a fan or following thier individual journeys. While listening to Melanie speak so candidly about her time in The Spice Girls and ti be so vulnerable made me cry. I relate to her so much. The struggles with self confidence, eating disorders, and mental health issues. I also have PMDD and struggle. Her poignant description of what depression feels like to her made me cry. I've never been able to put that feeling into words quite the same way and I've never felt more seen and heard. Its amazing to me that after all these years I am still learning and growing from these women. They are like life long friends and always will be. Even though I've never physically met them. Thank You Melanie for sharing your life with us all. After all the media scrutiny, you most certainly didn't have to share all your pain and beauty with us, but you did anyway, and im so thankful you did. She said she hoped this book would help someone. Even one person. It helped me feel seen. Thank you Sporty. Much Love. ❤️
