About this listen

True love begins with a terrible ex in this steamy rom-com by USA Today best-selling author Mia Sosa.

Meet Vanessa Cordero. A cynic with a colorful past. You see, in college, Vanessa devised a profitable side gig: For a reasonable fee, she’d date your latest crush...and make his life miserable. Too clingy? Check. Jealous? Check. A mother's worst nightmare? Check, check, check. By the time Vanessa was done with him, your guy would be ready for...YOU.

Meet Jason Torres. A certified commitment-phobe. Jason doesn't plan on getting married anytime soon (if ever), much to his mother’s dismay. What he needs is a temporary girlfriend. A totally inappropriate girlfriend. Someone his mother will hate. So she'll abandon her hopes of getting Jason to the altar—for a while at least.

Enter Lisa, Vanessa's younger sister. She's got her eye on Jason and convinces Vanessa to come out of retirement for one last starter ex engagement. The rules are simple: no touching, no fooling around, and definitely no falling in love. But nothing's going according to plan. Because Vanessa can't ditch Jason no matter how hard she tries. And the longer these two are around each other, the more neither of them wants to be apart.

Mia Sosa: Queen of creating FMCs I’d hate IRL

“What in the 90s romcom nonsense is this?”
This is rom-com cliche city, but with fresh, salsarific twists. Manipulating folks into a love match?
Never in a million years would I like such people in real life. But in the spirit of Hitch, where it’s all in the name of love, I’m a sucker for the shenanigans.

“Insert proverbial record scratch”
Favorite bits: Vanessa’s internal monologue is vicious and I was there for it. Both narrators were excellent with the accents and chemistry. The book gift … hahahaha. The comedy is very Johnson-centric, as in more salty than sweet.

Minor nitpicks: This makes you work through most of the book to get to the couple of naughty bits, and the comedy peters out quite a bit by the halfway mark. The tone was a bit heavy handed on the
“Latin working class vs. rich white people” drama, but that was easily forgiven with the shorter book length and majority fun feel.

The heart of these characters.

I loved the truth behind lessons that everyone needs to learn. It was portrayed so well in this book. And the romance was awesome.

Romcom at its best!

Love how this writer takes the traditional romcom formula and adds a few unexpected twists… and a little spice. This book explores family dynamics and emotions that bring tears to your eyes, but you don’t actually cry because there is so much to laugh about. All of Mia Sosa’s books have been great so far. Looking forward to all the upcoming titles on Audible!

The diversity

I would have liked more New York accents otherwise it was a solid romance novel. Also the main character needed to be less whoa is me.

Cute listen

Cute book that was easy to listen to. If you’re looking for an easy listen this is it. Wish there was a bit more at the end but overall would still give it a great rating.

Fun romcom

Enjoyed this story a lot. Listened to it in 2 days. It did trigger me that the author uses LatinX and Afro-puertorican and black puertorican. But then I remember that this is written by a person raised in the states. Puertoricans never use Latinx and NEVER distinguish someone who is black or white, we’re Puertoricans and that’s it. But understanding the racial divides in the US I guess you can understand why the author used those terms. Pretty fun rom com with great dual POV narration.

Cute funny and hot

Loved this book. I have never read a book by Mia Sosa but it was a recommended read and included in my membership so I tried it out. It was interesting and funny… then the heat like wait a second I wasn’t expecting that. The story line was great and I loved the different characters. Will have to check out her other books.
