About this listen

In her moving account of how she came to understand the world around her despite being blind and deaf since childhood, Helen Keller confirms that no physical obstacle can hinder the achievements of the human mind.

Included with Keller's poignant autobiography are her letters, spanning 15 years, which reveal her remarkable intellectual growth and empathic soul. Commentary by her teacher, Anne Sullivan, and the book's original editor is also featured, providing illuminating insight from two of Keller's closest companions.

The Story of My Life not only transformed societal attitudes toward those living with a disability, it inspired everyone who felt daunted by restrictions to dream big. Keller was eloquent proof of that dream - and of her belief that everything in life, even darkness and silence, held liberating possibilities and wonder.

enlightening

Having had much association with blind and some also deaf folks and legally blind myself. the reading of this has been momentous. Miss Keller was truly remarkable, though undoubtedly blessed by the fortuitous support of a well-off family, and the guidance of a truly gifted teacher and extended network of friends and well placed enlightened personages. This book profits much by the inclusion of explanatory narrative and discussion of how the imagery of her writing developed and what fostered her positive perspectives.

Listening to her writing with its profoundly intricate and picturesque language made me wonder what made it possible. The supplemental material helped me come to terms with my impressions

Too long and repetitious

This book covers Helen Keller's life only through college. Part I is her book. Part 2 are her letters, repeating much of what was already in the book. Part 3 is the perspective of her teacher and the editor (I presume). Each section is a bout 5 hours long. Part 3 does add to Part 1, but Part 2 could have been omitted. Nevertheless, the early story of an extraordinary woman. Will need to review a later biography/encyclopedia for her post-college life

somewhat interesting at times

It was less interesting than I had hoped. I ended up skipping large sections of Keller's letters and the Frost King section near the end. Anne Sullivan's letters/notes were the most interesting part.
