About this listen

Exclusively from Audible

Robert Louis Stevenson presents the suspenseful, eerie and captivating story of a ruthless scientist who sets out to liberate his inner demon from the firm clutches of his conscience.

Upon bearing witness to the extent of Mr Hyde's violent nature, Jekyll is horrified by his callous disregard for the welfare of others and greatly ashamed by the unstoppable nature of his ambition.

Eager to redeem himself, Jekyll sets out to capture and stop the bloodthirsty Mr Hyde, by any means necessary. However, in keeping with true gothic tradition, Dr Jekyll must now face a race against time as damning evidence is uncovered, and the investigating detectives and interested parties are brought right to his door.

Hailed by the Detective Club as 'one of the most amazing crime stories ever written', Stevenson's Jekyll and Hyde was met with immediate critical approval, ensuring its success and popularity for years to come.

A highly accomplished Scottish novelist, poet and travel writer, Robert Louis Stevenson is also credited with stories of Treasure Island, A Child's Garden of Verses and Kidnapped. Arguably, however, none have contributed to English literature quite like the unique tale of Dr Jekyll and his monster, Mr Hyde.

Narrator Biography

Best known for his roles in The Hobbit, Hannibal, Captain America, Robin Hood, Spooks and North and South, Richard Armitage has established himself as one of the greatest British actors of our time.

With 11 audiobooks under his belt, including Charles Dickens' David Copperfield, David Hewson's Romeo and Juliet: A Novel and Georgette Heyer's Venetia, Richard's storytelling abilities have not gone unnoticed. In 2014, he was merited with having narrated the Audiobook of the Year, Hamlet, Prince of Denmark: A Novel.

Providing another equally captivating performance in this new and highly anticipated adaptation of The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, Richard Armitage gradually builds and maintains the perfect atmosphere needed for this suspenseful classic horror story.

Richard Armitage a Definite Plus!

The short story in itself is good, but can seem dry when reading on your own. Richard Armitage just brings a whole new feel to the story that would never happen reading on my own with my limited imagination.

The prose is exceptional, and the story brings to mind that we all have different natures within ourselves that oftentimes shouldn’t be allowed to surface. #Classics #FabulousNarrator #Suspenseful #tagsgiving #sweepstakes

Enjoyable

Enjoyable rendition of a classic tale. Would have liked more variation in the pronounced characters.

Enjoyable but Repetitive

The performance was wonderful (great Mr. Hyde voice), yet the book repeats concepts so often to be dull. I realize it's a classic, but I'm not gonna like any phrase after my 5th time reading it paraphrased.

A great performance of a classic!

Would you listen to The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde again? Why?

Yes I would. Richard Armitage is absolutely superb!

Who was your favorite character and why?

Mr. Hyde. Armitage's interpretation is way better than I expected. He really delivered an excellent performance.

What does Richard Armitage bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

He brought such a well defined contrast between the voices of all the characters. It was amazing.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The Jekyll/Hyde transformation. Simply brilliant.

Any additional comments?

Highly recommended. As a story, I wish RLS would have given it a bit more detail as to what exactly caused the transformation, and I would have liked to see a little more conclusive ending. But all in all, it was great.

Masterpiece

I’ve loved this story since I was eight year’s old. It’s amazing how it can be interpreted in various ways depending on ones experiences. For me... it represents my inner turmoil. Dealing with morality vs desires. The scales ⚖️ are rarely leveled but I try nonetheless. Richard Armitage did an impeccable job narrating Mr. Stevenson’s work.

Always a great book

This speaks volumes to the human condition. The duality (or more) of our lives. Not that we’re murderous by nature, but rather, when we closely examine ourselves, we are often hypocritical. Sure, we come up with all sorts of reasons as to why but, they only placate our own mind rather than absolve us of those transgressions.

Strange indeed

I thoroughly enjoyed this edition of The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. The merits of the story itself are in no need of my own endorsement, but I will say that the narration is superb. All at once the voice, cadence and tone invoke an emotional response befitting this classic by R. L. S.
