About this listen

Set in New York's exclusive Hamptons seaside resort, The Summer Without You is a gorgeously escapist listen from the Sunday Times bestselling author of The Rome Affair, Karen Swan.

'Pure escapism' – Marie Clare

Rowena Tipton isn't looking for a new life, just a new adventure, something to while away the months as her long-term boyfriend presses pause on their relationship before they become engaged. But when a chance encounter at a New York wedding leads to an audition for a coveted houseshare in The Hamptons – Manhattan's elite beach scene – suddenly a new life is exactly what she's got.

Stretching before her is a summer with three eclectic housemates, long days on white sandy beaches and parties on gilded tennis courts. But high rewards bring high stakes, and Rowena soon finds herself caught in the crossfire of a vicious intimidation campaign.

Alone for the first time in her adult life, Rowena has no-one to turn to but a stranger – who is everything she doesn't want, but possibly everything she needs.

'It's the perfect listen for summer day at the beach (or the Hamptons!)' – GirlsLovetoRead

Great story, but it had its flaws. Narration was too often shrill and strident and just jarring. A lot of yelling and raised voices. The author seemed to be on a soapbox about coastal erosion, The book was too long--could have used a good edit. But overall another good Karen Swan book.

Loved the story with reservations

Great story, easy listening, I didn’t want it to end. Some of the voices were a bit annoying but the storyline made it easy to look past them.

I thoroughly enjoyed this story!

Basically, guy says "let's put this whole thing on hold for 6 months and then pick up where we left off!". He's a fool, she's heartbroken. She gets a chance to work in the US in the Hamptons for the summer. It takes awhile, but she comes into her own. The guy returns after 6 months and there you are - what will she do?
The book is rather long, nearly 17 hours. Much of it is spent on her depression and loss of her perfectly planned future. You read about her slow but incremental growth and see a glimmer of hope for her.
Bottom line - your future is never quite what you planned it to be.
Narrator Katie Scarfe was very good. Male, female voices, as well as British and American accents were handled well.

Vision for the future is interrupted

Wasn't sure at the beginning but this is a book with really good development. I couldn't wait for the ending and yet I never wanted the summer to end. This was a great listen any time of the year but I really funny intriguing , my only complaint is loud Bobby. This is a great group of characters, set in an awesome summer place with great twists and turns. Highly recommend.

Great listen, loved it
