About this listen

More than six years after his death, David Halberstam remains one of this country's most respected journalists and revered authorities on American life and history in the years since WWII. A Pulitzer Prize winner for his groundbreaking reporting on the Vietnam War, Halberstam wrote more than 20 books, almost all of them best sellers. His work has stood the test of time and has become the standard by which all journalists measure themselves.

The Teammates is the profoundly moving story of four great baseball players who have made the passage from sports icons - when they were young and seemingly indestructible - to men dealing with the vulnerabilities of growing older. At the core of the audiobook is the friendship of these four very different men - Boston Red Sox teammates Bobby Doerr, Dominic DiMaggio, Johnny Pesky, and Ted Williams - who remained close for more than 60 years.

The book starts out in early October 2001, when Dominic DiMaggio and Johnny Pesky begin a 1,300-mile trip by car to visit their beloved friend, Ted Williams, whom they know is dying. Bobby Doerr, the fourth member of this close group - "my guys", Williams used to call them - is unable to join them. This is a book - filled with historical details and first-hand accounts - about baseball and about something more: the richness of friendship.

Surprisingly Interesting

Baseball players after their playing days shouldn't be that interesting of a story, but this one is compelling, former teammates who became and remained friends until the ends of their lives. A real page turner, which I still can't believe. Much better than I expected or hoped. Well done.

Great story but the audio track has 3 bad spots

Where does The Teammates rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This is a WONDERFUL story for fans of baseball history!

Who was your favorite character and why?

It focused on Ted Williams

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

The Narrator was great; however, the audio recording had a couple problems where it skipped and jumped for 15 seconds or so.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

It made me tear up near the end.

Any additional comments?

This is a warm story about 4 friends who were lucky enough to play baseball together. Halberstam does an excellent job portraying their friendship from their younger years in the minor leagues through their lives well into their 80s.

A story any baseball fan will love

Excellent narration, well written and very well researched. Written by a lover of the sport of baseball.
I can't imagine loving it more even if I was a Red Sox fan.
Sorry it ended... I enjoyed the entire story.

Superb Baseball Story

Halberstam's The Teammates gives us an outstanding and moving story of iconic Red Sox baseball stars from the 1940's and 50's. And this is a excellent narration that brings alive this wonderful book.

A decent read for any Red Sox fan!

This is a story of the lives and relationships of 4 of the most beloved Boston Red Sox players, Ted Williams, Bobby Doerr, Dominic DiMaggio and Johnny Pesky. It's a heartfelt account inspired by a trip that 2 of the stars took from Massachusetts to Florida to visit the ailing Ted Williams for the last time. The book gives insight to some of their thoughts about the game, their lifelong friendship and growing old when they were so immortal.

Such a great story

This is truly a great story about friendship. It gives you a view of what makes it takes to make a friendship and how to make it last. I recommend this to all people not just fans of baseball and the Red Sox.

What a great story about how baseball used to be

I grew up listening to baseball games on the radio in the 60's and this book took me back to those days. I know the owners of baseball then kept the players in virtual slavery, as a fan I have to say I loved the fact that my favorite players were always there in April.

And I would have to say that friendships as portrayed in this book probably couldn't come about these days.

Saying all this - I loved this book.
