About this listen

The Three Kingdoms is one of the Chinese Noble Classics. The great empire of China is in turmoil. As the government becomes increasingly incompetent, warlords and nobles battle for power. In the north is the Kingdom of Wei, headed by cunning and manipulative Cao Cao. In the southeast is the Kingdom of Wu, ruled by masterful and charismatic Sun Quan. In the west is the Kingdom of Shu, commanded by kindhearted and humble Liu Bei.

Cao has committed murder and betrayal on his way to glory only to see his family’s throne overthrown by other scheming crooks. Sun and his advisor, Zhou Yu, have established a military stronghold but are no match against Liu’s military strategist, Zhuge Liang, who wisely advocates tolerance and mutual respect.

Full of thrilling action, sophisticated stratagems, passionate brotherhood, and loyalty, The Three Kingdoms sums up all the most important lessons of history.

If you enjoy this, three other Real Reads Chinese Noble Classics are also available: Dream of the Red Chamber, Journey to the West and The Water Margin.

Too short

Would you try another book from Luo Guanzhong and Christine Sun and/or Michelle Tate?

I'd prefer to read the full book written by Lou Guanzhong.

Has The Three Kingdoms turned you off from other books in this genre?

No, just wished it wasn't so short. 3 books can't be a 45 min read.

What does Michelle Tate bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

She read it well.

Could you see The Three Kingdoms being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

It already has at least two tv shows and tons on movies.

Any additional comments?

The story.

Wish it wasn’t the abridged version. Would really love the entirety of the book itself.

difficult to understand

the author effectively translated much of the story but utterly failed with the names and cultural context. Adding descriptors to the characters, like Lao with the long earlobes", or simply Anglo-sizing the names would do a great deal to help. likewise, many of the cultural elements of the story sound much like the American tall tales, but with no context they just sound like childish exaggerations.

this is nothing like the actual book I looked and tried to find even some resemblance of the story in the books I have and there's nothing very disappointing

Scam, do not buy.

It’s not the novel you came here for. The description is very misleading describing it as the original novel, even though it’s just a very crappy summary.
Why does it even exist here, misleading people into wasting their money?

Not a full version of the book. I was robbed.

This is a very small excerpt or summary of a handful of pages in a 120 chapter book. This barely enough information to even call it the RoTK.
