About this listen
Fourteen-year-old Reese’s dream of winning the Black Elk race is shattered when her beloved horse, Trusted Treasure, falls at the last jump, and the vet suggests they put him down. While still reeling from that loss, her family suffers a second tragedy—one that results in the end of their family business, the sale of Trusted Treasure, and irreparable damage to Reese’s relationship with her father.
Heartbroken and still longing to find Trusted Treasure, Reese meets Wes, a selective mute, whose way of training horses is unlike anything she’s ever seen. If anyone can win the Black Elk, it’s Wes—but he’s struggling with his troubled past, and having a teenage girl hanging around his barn isn’t exactly what he’d planned. Through heartaches and triumphs, Reese must prove her worth if she wants to heal her family, help Wes, and show them all that some dreams are worth fighting for.
A spellbinding tale in which every teenager has magical powers within them just waiting to be discovered, this book will have you laughing and crying as you root for Reese, the most unlikely of heroes.

Story
At the start of this remarkable story of recovery, healing, and redemption, Ginger Gaffney answers a call to help retrain the troubled horses at an alternative prison ranch in New Mexico, a facility run entirely by the prisoners. The horses are scavenging through the dumpsters, kicking and running down the residents when they bring the trash out after meals. One horse is severely injured. The horses and residents arrive at the ranch broken in one way or many: the horses are defensive and terrified, while the residents, some battling addictions, are emotionally and physically shattered.

On the night before she and her friends part for the summer, Carmen decides to toss them. But Tibby says they're great. She'd love to have them. Lena and Bridget also think they're fabulous. Lena decides they should all try them on. Whoever they fit best will get them. Nobody knows why, but the pants fit everyone perfectly.

Clever, original, and well done
I loved this book - and I’m not a horse enthusiast. I fell in love with this riveting tale as we witness Reese’s struggle with loss, adolescence and finding her voice in a world that feels cold and unwelcoming to her. With surprising twists and turns, the pages turn effortlessly, and you will not be disappointed by the ending.

A beautiful story
Just like the story, it was both calming and exhilarating…and almost impossible to stop listening to. It’s cleaver humor was just enough and sprinkled in sparingly. The descriptions so often left me feeling all of my senses as if I were living them. I would recommend to my friends in the horse world and those who aren’t. I loved it.

Amazingly well written with insight and depth
I loved this Story. In the beginning I wasn’t sure as the main character has crazy teenage attitude. But so important to the story of healing.
This is well written with depth of emotion and the beautiful experience that horses have on us. Funny at times too.

A Powerhouse Depiction of Love, Life, and Loss
Truth About Horses grabbed me right from its title. I am an animal lover and I honestly didn’t know what to expect. I was drawn instantly to these characters; the empathy was overwhelming as they were all so vulnerable through no fault of their own. All of the characters will resonate with you in some way; they are so identifiable. I must say I was dumbfounded after I read this that it was a young readers book. I am far from young! I enjoyed this book immensely. I haven’t read a book in quite awhile that I actually wanted to write down quotes…until now. A fabulous read!

The story line
I loved the story line, it was a really good book! I would definitely read it instead of listen to it again though . The way the narrator read the book did not flow well
