About this listen

From New York Times bestselling author Catherine Ryan Hyde comes a hauntingly emotional novel of how one man's life changes forever when he rediscovers his ability to feel the pain of others.

Something has been asleep in forty-year-old cattle rancher Aiden Delacorte for a long time. It all comes back in a rush during a hunting trip, when he's suddenly attuned to the animals around him, feeling their pain and fear as if it were his own. But the newfound sensitivity of Aiden's "wake up" has its price. He can no longer sleepwalk through life, holding everyone at arm's length. As he struggles to cope with a trait he's buried since childhood, Aiden falls in love with Gwen, a single mother whose young son bears a burden of his own.

Sullen and broken from his experiences with an abusive father, Milo has turned to acting out in violent and rebellious ways. Aiden can feel the boy's pain, as well as that of his victims. Now he and Milo must sift through their pasts to find empathy with the innocent as well as the guilty, to come to terms with their deepest fears, and to finally discover the compassionate heart of a family.

Another incredible story by Catherine Ryan Hyde

Being an animal lover, this was an especially powerful story for me. I loved it. I also appreciate the hard topics that were discussed. Another great read!

The Wake Up

I really enjoyed this book about a grown man who experienced a wake up of feelings he had hidden for years . Strangely enough, as he is realizing this new part of himself, he meets a mother with a son who has been traumatized, and while helping himself, he is also very beneficial in helping the young man. I enjoy the authors chacters and will read more of her books. Highly recommended! The audio was great.

Enjoyable but predictable

Every once in a while I want a happy feel-good listen. That’s when I turn to Catherine Ryan Hyde. Her stories are always about white people who learn a life lesson and everything turns out for the better. But there is always a message, and you end up feeling warm and fuzzy.

Missed

I love Catherine‘s books because of the inside always given. This one totally missed the mark totally, obviously Milo was an artist and not a horse person. Not only did the mom and the stepdad missed this, but the therapist missed it. Milo should have been allowed to pursue his artistic Path, and I’ve been forced into the horse life. Very disappointing.

Not this time!

I always look forward to this author's book, but this story was a disappointment to me. I have no constructive criticism because I stopped listening after an hour. I gave it 3 stars because of her previous books.

Another great one for Catherine Ryan Hyde

I really loved this book. I don’t think I’ve read one by Catherine Ryan Hyde that I haven’t loved. The empathy that Aiden feels is powerful and not something he wants, but it is the key to so much. Milo is a deeply troubled boy, but how can Aiden help him? You will become engrossed in the characters’ stories and will be rooting for a happy ending, but not sure how much of one you’ll get. I would definitely recommend this book.

Bravo!!!!

Ms Hyde has such insight and empathy for serious social problems affecting the growth an joy of many people. Reading her stories will hopefully open my eyes to the suffering of others and make me a more compassionate person.

Love this book.

This one was special. I wonder how many of us wander this life with a hole in their heart. I’d venture to guess most people to one degree or another.
