About this listen

When fiery and idealistic Kitty O'Kane escapes the crushing poverty of Dublin's tenements, she's determined that no one should ever suffer like she did. As she sets out to save the world, she finds herself at the forefront of events that shaped the early twentieth century. While working as a maid, she survives the sinking of the Titanic. As a suffragette in New York's Greenwich Village, she's jailed for breaking storefront windows. And traveling war-torn Europe as a journalist, she's at the Winter Palace when it's stormed by the Bolsheviks. Ultimately she returns to her homeland to serve as a nurse in the Irish Civil War.

During Kitty's remarkable journey, she reunites with her childhood sweetheart, Tom Doyle, but Tom doesn't know everything about her past - a past that continues to haunt her. Will Kitty accept that before she can save everyone else, she needs to find a way to save herself? Or will the sins of her past stop her from pursuing her own happiness?

Great

My selection for the Amazon monthly book. So glad I selected it. Killy is the kind of character that just survives. Hard to believe all the adventures she had but she had them and survived. The historical aspects of the story were true and granted the author took some liberties with his character but that is his prerogative. Colin Falconer is a good author and I will be reading more of his books. He gave me faith in fortune tellers, sort of. Kitty grows up in the poor section of Dublin, her father beats her, she takes it all but vows to escape. She tells her childhood friend, Tom Doyle, that one day she’ll get out. His mother works hard to get his brother and Tom into better schools and Kitty knows he will leave. She never expects to see him again. She leaves Dublin as a stewardess on the Titanic. There she meets two men who will play a huge role in her life. Lincoln Randolph, a young American who tells her she deserves more than to be a slave to other people. And, Flash Jack Finnegan, an Irishman who is one of her cabins to take care of on the ship. This book bobs and weaves and Kitty is right there the whole time. She never believers she is good enough for the love of her life, Tom Doyle, but she never forgets him. If you like historical fiction, with lots of action, and good strong characters, you’ll like this book. There is an audible version which I got to go with my Kindle edition. I love audible.

Excellent performance

The storyline is good, but the end is kind of a let down. You wait the whole book for the ending and they finally get there and it's over.

Disappointing

A great deal of repetition in the story. Seemed like the narrator continued to aspire to make a difference and be a trailblazer, but was always sidetracked with her poor choices. She wasn't the empowered woman she wanted to become and the writer never allowed her to. It was a disappointment. You were always rooting for her to come into her own, only to follow her in one misery after another. The end was not realistic nor developed.

Totally enthralling

I was engaged every moment. Each new event and corner was more exciting than the last. I found myself telling the characters not to be an idiot and anguishing along with them! read it!

Predictable

You started to figure out her next narrow escape before halfway through. Not great literature.

I really liked this book at the beginning, but then kind of got tired of the unrealistic events.
