About this listen

An American heiress nobody wants; a duke every woman desires; and a murder no one expects.

As a young duke, all Nathaniel wants is to be left alone. So when he meets Charlotte, an outspoken American heiress, he is suspicious of her indifference. Too many women have sought - and failed - to catch him.

However, Charlotte is unimpressed by his title. She has no interest in English dukes. All she wants is to leave dreary England and travel to the sunny sands of Egypt to see the grand pyramids.

Unfortunately, a debutante seeking to entrap Nathaniel gets murdered, and his reputation as a confirmed misogynist makes him a suspect. On impulse, Charlotte comes to his aid, unaware that her actions place her in danger, too.

Neither Charlotte nor the duke know that a highwayman interested in rich heiresses is following Charlotte, and that another debutante lies dead in Nathaniel's carriage. And unfortunately, the evidence soon complicates Nathaniel's efforts to prove his innocence and convince Charlotte that he is worthy of her love.

Some nights just don't go as planned.

Narrator was not to my liking.

I really liked the story, it would of kept me more entranced if it was not for the narrator.
She almost put me to sleep, especially doing the heiress part.

Horrible Narration!!!

Some of the worst narration ever. Struggled to listen until the end. Numerous times, I forced myself to continue listening just to know how the story line played out. This narrator is monotonous, and listening to her is painful. I would like to continue with the Archer Family Series, but I will choose a digital book rather than Audible. Too bad Audible didn't learn after the first book and hire a different narrator.

A Madcap Romance

An enjoyable read with quite a bit of madcap happenings but ultimately the mysteries are solved, the murderer gets justice and the H/h get their HEA.

I wasn't thrilled with the narration for Charlotte as she was supposed to be a southern girl with a drawl. That did not come across at all.

*A Clean Read

Worth Reading for the Story

the attempt at accents made this book really difficult to continue. but the writing was definitely cute if not very deep. I love the balance of lust and love but think the false engagement plot should have been bigger or cut out all together lots of short plot twists that don't flow as well as they could. Really enjoyed the ending. I hope to find more from this author if the narration is by someone else.

Clean suspense

I’m enjoying this whole series of clean historical reads. This one has some suspense and a twist.

Horrible accent

The American accent was cringeworthy. The story as passable but a little meandering. Not a recommendation for this.

Narration is grating

The story is great and has some bits of humor, although Charlotte is an absolute annoyance. While she’s definitely more progressive than expected, she’s an absolute grating pinhead who thinks she knows everything and is oftentimes ridiculously incorrect. She feeds perfectly into the “feminazi” stereotype.

Overall, pretty good. If it weren’t for the narrator, I would absolutely listen again. She drags out words like a petulant child and ends almost every sentence/question/exclamation in one of two ways: either an “up” inflection like everything is a question, or in such a way that there is an implied ellipses.

Intriguing and well written

A story well researched. It held my interest to the end. I greatly apprecite the integrity with which moments of personal feeling and passion were expressed. Thank you to the author!!!
The narration particularly of the main character was a little stilted but overall it was well read.

Good mystery story

I laughed out loud several times over the dialogue. I enjoyed the sarcasm of the protagonists. The story ended with an interesting twist at the end. I didn’t like the American accent and that’s why I gave the performance a four. It was a great story other than that though.

Narration was ...wanting!

Not sure where the narrator picked up the “American” accent, but the delivery and the cadence were enough to make me skip ahead to the end when I couldn’t take listening to the annoying heroine of the story any longer.
