So far this is my favorite of the series, I couldn't stop once I'd hit play.

Best in the series so far

Had this as a recommendation from a friend. If I am being honest the first 3 dragged on a bit. Ever since the 4th they have continued to get better. This had the highest stakes yet.

Least Favorite

I wasn't too into this one. It didn't feel like there was enough plot or backstory, mostly action, so if you enjoy action in writing then you will probably like this book

I’m amazed, I don’t know what to say.

What do you do when you finally decide to listen to the audiobook version of a book that’s been your favorite thing in the world for 2/3 of your life?

What do you do when it’s so wonderful that it not only makes all the emotional moments feel fresh, but also makes you feel new ways of reading or interpreting scenes that are so precious they’re like a part of your very bones and brains and blood?

I kept going back over some parts over and over again just to process them.

This is also a book with dozens of moments that you can really lose yourself in. Just stop, stop reading, pause, and imagine what it’s like for each character. Imagine what any of them must have been thinking, feeling, expecting, changing their expectations.

From the end of book 5 through the last scene of book 6, not only Darren but others as well have their expectations about the future — theirs personally and that of their world — constantly being shifted and turned around. Basically all the vampires have their fundamental beliefs about who they are and about what “should” be, turned on their heads by the events of this book. And it’s easy to forget that the young protagonist isn’t as on top of things as he’d like to be.

In this book, things are definitely, fully out of his control, and though there’s no real illusion about that, he keeps his head high. It does all work out in the end — that last scene is magnificent — but in future books, it’s worth remembering to ask yourself whether or not Darren is as in control as he seems, and whether or not he can do anything about it (though the book seems to want to tell us he can’t, I think he could have).

//////
“Say yes, or we’ll have to take you down to the Hall of Death and punch a few holes in you.”

/////
The central figure of the trial scene could have sounded more deflated. I imagine the scene played as, deflated, with sharply contrasting bursts of anger (“have you no brains?” “Brave men who you murdered like vermin”)
But Darren’s “… that group agreed to it?” in the end was **perfect**.
