About this listen

Driving along the freeway, LAPD Sergeant Shane Scully glances over and sees at the wheel of a neighboring car his oldest friend and LAPD colleague, Jody Dean. Why is Scully so surprised? Because it's been two years since Jody committed suicide. Now Shane is confronted by the bizarre truth: Jody and five other cops thought to be dead are anything but. Originally sent deep undercover to bust an extremely violent international criminal network, they've gone bad. Calling themselves the Vikings, they are LAPD's worst nightmare: dangerous rogue cops who know how the system works.

Full of the high-wire suspense and wonderful characters that made The Tin Collectors a bestseller, The Viking Funeral brings Shane Scully back into action, pitting him against his closest childhood friend, and endangering the life of the woman he loves.

Informative and a Good Read

I found this book to be informative as well as a good story. I can't say much or it will spoil the for the reader. Suffice to say that it gives you some insight into how the criminal entity might be working unseen by everyday citizen.

Not bad, but not great

this was an okay book - not my favorite - not really engaging. Doesn't really make me have the urge to run out and look for #3 in the series after this one though. Mediocre.

Predictably good story, disappointing narration

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I'm sort of skipping around in the Shane Scully books, not reading them in any order, and this one actually sounds like an early book. Sadly, I think if it had been narrated by Scott Brick, who seems to have done all the later books, it wouldn't have sounded quite as sophomoric. Hill has a really nice voice when he just speaks normally, but when he speaks the female parts, it's nothing short of awful. Add to that, he sometimes forgets to use the woman's voice for the entire dialogue, starting out in an awful falsetto and ending in his regular voice...sometimes a little confusing. On the positive side, Hill enunciates beautifully, and if he just wouldn't do those really weird, affected voices, he'd be pretty darn good; the narration is well paced. The story is good, not great; maybe I'd like Scott Brick's version better. This is also done in the second person, where the later books are written in first person. This series reads better in first person.

No prosecution of corporate crime in 1999

Why? Who was President at that time?
What would he profit?
How much does our government lose compared to what politicians profit?

I love the Shane Scully books.

this was a pretty good segment in the Shane Scully saga. A little slow in the middle but great finish

Another Cannell classic!

Another worthy entry in the Shawnee Scully series. Each one adding layers to the character and letting us into more of his world.

I will not finish listening to this book

There are only two books that I have not completed. This is one of them. Usually a book has some redeeming factor; humor, love, poetic writing... This has none. It is dark, dirty, vulgar, and is leaving me absolutely cold. This is the very first time I was mid-listen and realized (in the middle of nowhere) that I could not listen any longer. I turned the book off and enjoyed the silence. In short, I do not recommend this book to any one - for any reason.
