What do you do when everyone around you has what you want but can’t have? For Sophie Lefebvre, the answer was simple - accept the position as governess to the pompous Earl of Wycliff’s sister, Gertrude. Rude, arrogant and absorbed with his wealth, his presence is a hard task to endure, but far better than the pain of watching others have what she cannot. Claveston St. John, Earl of Wycliff, was smitten the moment he laid eyes on Lady Tate’s companion at the wedding of his good friend, William Pierce. When in jest he offered her a job as his sister’s governess, he never imagined she ...

Pleasant Christmas romance
Nothing earth shaking but pleasant enough. The story is set at a Christmas house party which is always fun. The hero is a good guy ready to change his rakish ways for the right woman. The heroine is prim and proper and has a tendency cry. I couldn’t really warm up to her. Her younger sister, however, who is one of the minor characters, has the potential to be a fun heroine.
One of the more entertaining aspects of the book were the party games that the guests were required to play. One involved a choice between giving a “forfeit” or having soot smeared on one’s face, another was “bullet cake“ which concluded with someone being doused with flour. It made me wonder whether those really were traditional Regency-era house party games.
