About this listen

Bahzell Bahnakson of the Horse Stealer hradani had never wanted to be the champion of the War God. Unfortunately, the War God had insisted. Which was how he had found himself among hostile strangers in the Empire of the Axe - except that that was only the least of his problems.

For a start, there was the Order of Tomanak, who were horrified that their deity had chosen a hradani as champion, and were resolved to rectify the matter in a most unpleasant fashion. And if he survived that, he had to get home somehow, in spite of the enemies determined to stop him, to face the Dark God who had sworn to destroy all hradani. But one thing Bahzell had learned: a champion of the War God Tomanak does what needs to be done. And those who got in his way had better watch out.

One of the best sword and sorcery tales around.

David Weber is one of my absolute favorite authors and this series is an example why.

This is a great story made truly outstanding by the fantastic narration by Nick Sullivan. Mr. Sullivan goes beyond mere narration into voice acting, going so far as to use different geographical accents for characters from different parts of the story's world. This extra touch makes the story come to life for me.

Fun story

Enjoyable

Not too complicated, characters well-developed, action, some adventure, underlying theme not over stated. I am enjoying the series.

Paladin in action

Once I started the first book, I ended up getting the second immediately, and I am planning on getting the third book soon. Like this first book it is also a fast paced book.

It is very enjoyable audio book that style of narration matches with the story very well, and over all it is a lot of fun to listen to this book.

Our barbarian Paladin is introduced officially to the rest of its deity's order, and things become interesting. Book has a very good narrative about the prejudices and bigotry though sometimes it is repetitive.

Couple of characters introduced in book are amusing and sense of humor does work within this book as well. It is pretty much a continuation of first book without any breaks and I recommend this book as well that these books are solid 4 star books. Very enjoyable.

Just like Book 1

Where does The War God's Own rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This is a fast pace light read. The narrator is one of the best I have heard.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

At times I found listening to some aspect of the different ways each group of peoples behaved in this word to be tedious . I understand the author was creating a whole world but at times the story got bogged down in description.

Valor and Humor in equal measure, a warrior's tale

What made the experience of listening to The War God's Own the most enjoyable?

The narration is clear and the narrator uses accents to keep the characters straight. The story reads a bit like a viking edda, great deeds and courage in the face of fear.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Bahzell is my favorite character - I come from Norwegian heritage and the stoic warrior whose raises stubborn to a virtue reminds me of all my world war II / Korean war veteran uncles.

Which character – as performed by Nick Sullivan – was your favorite?

I very much enjoy Brandark - the wisecracking sidekick makes the story into a playful romp. I like how Mr. Weber weaves the "Lay of Bahzell Bloody Hand" into the story without actually writing it, I think using the reader's imagination is genius.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The scene near the end when Baron Tellian and Bahzell speak of the pain that each side has caused their people shows a depth of understanding of feuds and wars. Wish our politicians would think more of the human cost before sending us to war.

Any additional comments?

Although this is set in a mythical land, the lessons are real. But rather than a dry lecture about courage and honor this is a true story that didn't happen.

good story poor narrator

This Weber seriew is full of purple prose but the story line is lots of fun. I really don't like listening to the reader. He has a nice voice but Sullivan reads the script like radio sports commentator. Very irritating to hear a bloody battle narrated with tones more associated with sports broadcasts.

# 2 Good and I want more.

I'm a teacher, and it's my policy to NOT give any 100%s for work done by anyone especially me. ( I figure there's always room for improvement.) If you want to know more about what I think, check out the review for War Maids Choice. Thank you.
