About this listen

Bahzell Bahnakson of the Horse Stealer hradani had never wanted to be the champion of the War God. Unfortunately, the War God had insisted. Which was how he had found himself among hostile strangers in the Empire of the Axe - except that that was only the least of his problems.

For a start, there was the Order of Tomanak, who were horrified that their deity had chosen a hradani as champion, and were resolved to rectify the matter in a most unpleasant fashion. And if he survived that, he had to get home somehow, in spite of the enemies determined to stop him, to face the Dark God who had sworn to destroy all hradani. But one thing Bahzell had learned: a champion of the War God Tomanak does what needs to be done. And those who got in his way had better watch out.

David Weber is one of my absolute favorite authors and this series is an example why.

This is a great story made truly outstanding by the fantastic narration by Nick Sullivan. Mr. Sullivan goes beyond mere narration into voice acting, going so far as to use different geographical accents for characters from different parts of the story's world. This extra touch makes the story come to life for me.

One of the best sword and sorcery tales around.

Enjoyable

Not too complicated, characters well-developed, action, some adventure, underlying theme not over stated. I am enjoying the series.

This is a strong continuation of the series. I find Nick Sullivan's reading of these books to be superb, really increasing my enjoyment of the scenes. This series is one of the most enjoyable series I have listened to, and I would strongly recommend it for anyone who just wants to listen to entertaining fluff.

If you liked the first book, you'll like this one

I have really enjoyed all the stories in this series. They are relatively light reading - unlike some sf/fantasy books (for example Modesitt), there are not significant underlying ethical or moral commentary. However, they are great tales about people choosing to fight against evil in a well developed world. The author does not leave strands of unanswered questions, though each book sets up the next.
What makes these books great is the narration. the narrator's voice are distinct, the pacing great, and the emphasis is all in the right places. Master story telling.

Fun book with great narration

some people may complain on some pacing issues, but it's hard to beat as a second book in a series. good characters that are easy to cheer for. excited for the journey to continue!

oh so good

This is a great book, in a so far, strong series of fantasy novels. This one does a more significant amount of world building than the prior book. I love the authors' take on fantasty tropes. For example, elves are a relatively 'young' race in this series, things along those lines. I kept finding myself stopping what I was doing to take notes. I am looking forward to book 3!

And so the adventure continues!

I'm a teacher, and it's my policy to NOT give any 100%s for work done by anyone especially me. ( I figure there's always room for improvement.) If you want to know more about what I think, check out the review for War Maids Choice. Thank you.

# 2 Good and I want more.

This book did not have near as much action in it as the first one but was still a good read if you are invested in the series. You learn more about the different races, their history and how it affects the interaction of the races that was left a little lacking from the first novel.

Nick Sullivan's narration, as the first, was top notch.

More Character Development than Action
