About this listen

Mutiny

For Lt. Commander Colin Maclntyre, it began as a routine training flight over the moon. For Dahak, a self-aware Imperial battleship, it began millennia ago when that powerful artificial intelligence underwent a mutiny in the face of the enemy. The mutiny was never resolved - Dahak was forced to maroon not just the mutineers but the entire crew on prehistoric Earth.

Dahak has been helplessly waiting as the descendants of the loyal crew regressed while the mutineers maintained control of technology that kept them alive as the millennia passed. But now Dahak’s sensors indicate that the enemy that devastated the Imperium so long ago has returned - and Earth is in their path. For the sake of the planet, Dahak must mobilize its defenses. And that it cannot do until the mutineers are put down. So Dahak has picked Colin Maclntyre to be its new captain. Now Maclntyre must mobilize humanity to destroy the mutineers once and for all - or Earth will become a cinder in the path of galactic conquest.

A Masterful telling of a Masterful story

I'm biased I admit, but I came by it honestly. I first came across this book while I was attending Military School. The story of Dahak changed the way I looked at the moon and cast my own imaginings to what secrets it could hold.

To hear one of my all time favorite science fiction stories ever, presented in such a great format as this audio book has transported me back to those first days of my youth spent enjoying this title.

The narration is top notch, you appreciate every character and I'll admit, impressed me with how well executed a certain character's manner of speaking, if you know you know. My hat off to this wonderful treasure so well told.

One of my all-time favourites.

I first read this about 25 years ago and it is still one of my favourite sci-fi stories. The only downside to this one is the narrator’s odd style. He sounds like he’s reading a children’s bedtime story and his timing leaves much to be desired. Pauses where there should be none, no pauses where there should be some, particularly to differentiate between scenes, and a peculiar, off-time rhythm all tend to detract from a great romp.
Still worth the listen, doubly so if Audible adds the next in the series, Armageddon Inheritance.
If given the narrator it deserves, like Sean Runnette, John Lee or (my personal fave) RC Bray, this series would really come to life.

Excellent story, a few issues with audio quality.

The story is great, though admittedly it is showing some age. Being written in 1991 will do that to a sci-fi story. It hardly matters because this was back when David Weber was still writing well and hadn't written himself into a corner, unlike the end of some other series I won't mention.

The big problem is the audio quality. The sound is muddy with tinny highs and bassy lows. The recording volume was also quiet so it will need more volume than other audiobooks. There are a few mispronunciations and maybe a word or two wrong but otherwise the narration is good. I tried it on headphones, in a car, on a hi-fi system all with the same muddy sound quality and weird EQ.

I'm glad this finally came to Audible. It's the one and only series I ever requested via email in a long-forgotten letter years ago. Warts and all this is still worth it.
